Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes (I am speechless)

Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes

BENTON, La. – The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.

Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

[snip]

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.

Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

[snip]

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.

The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.

Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

[snip]

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.

Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

I don't know if he was really given away or put down. I just know he just disappeared one day (after having been chained on the back porch for a few months) and never came back. I think either something happened in the time he was missing or the teenage grandson did something. The horrible person once tried hitting him with a chain leash because the dog would not attack our dog. Even after he turned that dog never tried to hurt our dog. The dog would often go to this boy's house, so if he wasn't put down he might be living with the boy on a permanent basis. I never asked. Was just happy he was no longer here. Now the dog at the house is a miniature chihuahua thing that is smaller than our little cat.

Good I would have been really upset if I lived next to that dog. I don't hate pits. I wouldn't have one because they aren't my kind of dog. I have bred akitas and dobermans and they have a bad reputation too. I am hearing about akitas biting children now quite a bit because I know many breeders. When I had my last daughter my husband got rid of ours . Sassy was in her cage when he walked by with the baby and Sassy went wild, we never had a problem with her and the baby. I think she didn't want my husband holding the baby. Each time he would pick her up and the dog was in cage or out she would growl. We couldn't keep her and she was co owned by my friend who took her. After that we didn't get a dog until my daughter was 4 yrs old and then it was a shih tzu. So far the 5 we own now are just wonderful with children and cats and I have heard horror stories about them too. I think owners need to be more informed before they go out and just buy that cute little puppy. People don't understand that some dogs are working dogs and need room etc. Chaining a dog in the backyard is no life for the dog. I blame the owners more then I do the dogs for bad behavior.

My guess is the story went like this,
Mom and Dad went out partying,
leaving baby at home alone....

Came home and passed out, not checking the condition of babies body....

Woke up out of drug/alcohol induced haze to realize that baby was missing body parts.

BTW, ferrets sell for more than what a crib AND cheap bed would cost at Goodwill.

Idiots.

You are asking for numbers and I'm providing them. The number and severity of pit bull attacks speak for themselves.

You are the one saying pit bulls aren't dangerous and I have provided mountains of evidence that they are. The ball is in your court now to provide credible evidence of what you say.

Asking for scientific studies to prove the obvious is an old Internet debate trick and I'm not biting. I've made my case with facts, now, refute it with something other than opinion, innuendo and abuse.

What most people don't realize is NO infant or small child can safely be left alone with a dog. I don't care what breed. You never know what a child will do to a dog when left alone. If the dog is being hurt it will bite.

This is something I repeat, ad nauseum, when people haul out the: "GET RID OF YOUR DOG BEFORE SHE EATS YOUR UNBORN CHILD!" craziness. Thank you for being a voice of reason on this thread, Pandora.

I am not asking for "numbers." What I am asking for, over and over, is to prove that pits are human-aggressive by nature.

I have not at any point denied that some pits have attacked/killed people. What I am saying is that this is not a natural behavior for them. Any dog can be trained to attack, and there is no denying that a pit will do more damage than, say, a chihuahua.

Again, I'm not asking for numbers, I'm talking about predisposition. Instead of looking into that issue, you are calling it a "trick" in order to avoid it, or so it seems.

You could probably Google any breed of dog and find biting/attack stores, btw.

Why thank you. What I always did when I had a baby and dogs at home was bring something of the baby's home before the baby got home so the dog could sniff it and get the baby's scent. Worked fine for me. I also made time for the dog to get to know the baby and not resent her/him. And I spent time alone with my dogs so they didn't feel forgotten .~~Pandora~~

Actually, I didn't assert anything. I ASSUMED, which last time I read was not a crime. I was really focusing on bad parenting in my original post, not gun law in Virginia, which as you can see, I am not an expert on. I AM an expert in parenting, as I have raised two excellent children. Ask me a question about good parenting and I will be sure to get it right.

These links say pits are not human-aggressive. But they do give you some good information and tips.

I just knew if I got talking about dogs I would want a bigger one then a shih tzu. Anyone know anything about Golden Doddles? I need a non shedding dog and I think they look so cute. The people I have spoken to say they are great with children and very friendly. But they are breeders so I was wondering if anyone knows any or has one.

Not quite...

And you didn't answer the question. That's okay, because I know you can't. You don't know. I knew that when I asked, but wanted to see if you were honest and worth talking to.

And now I know, at least, the answer to That.

Cheers.
