Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes
BENTON, La. The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.
Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.
Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.
The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.
Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.
Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

Watch out, all the pit-haters will dogpile on ya.
And for Heaven's Sake don't make it out like the six week old puppy was innocent.
Solution: All Animals Must Be Killed. /s
Quiet, Pandora, you're interrupting the pit bull fight.
The threads on Bush Sucks are opinion.
The threads about Pit Bulls attacking people, killing and maiming kids, and all sorts of other chaos are threads about about verifiable incidents.
But you knew that.
OOOOOOOOOOO I am sorry. Go back to your fight and I will be quiet. ~~Pandora~~
"By the way, have you met my dog, Wild Hickory?"
Not looking for a fight just clairity and intellectual honesty.
You asked for stats correct?
What kind of stats on pits, killing, maiming or just attacks?
Collected by whom?
And the intellectually honest question......
If you had the stats you asked for and they did show overwhelming evidence that pits are overwhelmingly leading the attack and or kill stat, would you, as God as your witness, honestly get rid of your dogs? Would it honestly change your mind enough to act on that information?
If not this discussion is moot.
It looks like the parents changed their story to save the puppy (and "lose" the ferret). Still, it's chemical addiction that starts this outrage in the first place.

Other breeds of dogs are beaten, kicked and mistreated probably just about as often as pit bulls - and yet, it seems that 98% of the killings and maimings in reported dog attacks are done by pit bulls. Most of the time, too, the owners stand outside the hospital where their children are being stitched up (if they live) vowing and declaring that "Snarl" has always been a "member of the family" and "wouldn't hurt a flea, but he just snapped and we can't understand what happened - and they ain't a puttin' ol' "Snarl" to sleep, we're a takin' him back home whar he belongs".
2 + 2 doesn't add up to 16.
The pit bull is evidently a breed that has a place, but it is decidedly NOT hovering over a crib.
You were lucky that the loaded gun didn't go off, but excuse some of us for not choosing to have a herd of pit bulls for pets. - It's a free country, and enough pit bull afficianados are out there in it to insure adequate numbers of comfy homes for hordes of pits and plenty of kid's faces and toeseys for them to chew on when they're having a bad day. Having said that, ferret's teeth are sharp, too. So, who knows?
Gee, tell that to a friend of mine. Just recently he was helping out his neighbor by changing her license plate and her pit, got out of the house and attacked him while he was bent down behind the car, over 300 stitches. The dog tore him up, from his arms down his legs. She had the dog since puppyhood, he was very familiar with the dog as were his kids. He's thankful that when the dog freaked it got him instead of any of the kids in the neighborhood.
The name Pit Bull omes rfom the fact that they were specifically bred for pit fighting. It breeding, not just training, that makes them dangerous.
I have a Bulldog, talk about laid back. He naps about 3/4 of the day or he sits in a chair watching t.v., I swear. My husband has been watching the Dog Whisperer, Cesar said dogs need to be walked everyday, so he decides to start Munson on an excercise program. My husband, not the dog, comes back all invigorated from their walk/bonding experience. The next night my husband is all excited to do it again, dog sees leash, makes a mad dash up into the bathroom. Munson was not going anywhere. We also had a Newf mix, the best dog ever. When we put him down, from age, we got a purebred Newfoundland. He was exactly what they say about the breed temperment wise. I'd take him to the park with me and the little kids would be all over him. He'd just sit there and he looked like he was smiling. He'd roll over on his back so the kids could rub his belly. Most of the kids had never seen a dog that big and hairy and they'd just giggle. Unfortuately, he slipped out of the house/yard, we're not sure which and was killed by a car last month. We're still so upset about it.
Why had this thread degenerated into a series of flames for and against pit bulls?
The topic is that the parents of the child were negligent and slept through the screams of their child being eaten alive just inches from them.
You are so right. One needs a license to drive a car, own a gun, to fish...but no one tests people on their ability to raise children correctly.
Since when does one 'need' a license to own a gun IN VIRGINIA?
