Blizzard warning in Colo., N.M. digs out ( Global Warming ? )
, Associated Press ^ | 12-20-06 | JON SARCHE

A major snowstorm blew across Colorado toward the Plains on Wednesday, canceling hundreds of airline flights for holiday travelers and shutting down major highways in parts of four states.

The National Weather Service posted blizzard warnings for most of eastern Colorado and adjoining sections of Nebraska and Kansas.

A day earlier, the storm had pummeled New Mexico with up to a foot of snow.

Two feet of snow was possible in the foothills just west of Denver, with 2 to 3 feet a possibility farther north.

Up to 20 inches could accumulate on the Plains of eastern Colorado and wind up to 30 mph could pile the snow into high drifts...

"I'm going to grab my computer, talk to my boss and go back home,"... "I'm not going to take a risk and get stuck in Denver."

United Airlines, the busiest carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled more than 630 flights ...

Police closed Interstate 70 for more than 250 miles from just east of Denver to Colby, Kan., and sections of I-80 along a 140-mile stretch from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Big Springs, Neb...

"Crashes are beginning to occur," said Mary Jo Hall of the Nebraska Department of Roads.

Travelers stalled by the closures had already started filling Kansas motels during the morning, said Stan Whitley, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Truckers were pulling off I-80 at Ogallala, Neb. "Our parking lot is pretty small, but they're just kind of parked off on the streets," said cashier Michelle Krauter at the Sapp Brothers truck stop.

Scores of schools were closed, along with many courthouses in eastern Colorado.

We just donated the kids sled to the Salvation Army. I was thinking how fun it would be today for them to be out sledding.

That is wonderful.

It is good that they can voluntarily be together.

Take some pictures !

"I-25 is closed from Pueblo, just South of here, to the state border. Not a real good day to be out and about."

There's the Shelf Road up to Cripple Creek and Stagecoach Road from Gold Camp Road. ...very scenic and fun this time of year!

lol! Yes, I stay out of the fray. I must admit my traffic report was second hand from my son. He lived close, went out for coffee, observed, did three 360s and went straight back home. The wind, as you know, seems to be the culprit.

I-25 is closed from Denver to NM now. And I think they just said they are also closing I-70 west of Denver.

You're a good guy to worry about your neighbors. Hopefully, they have heat and enough provisions and are staying inside.

Around where I live, the town comes to a halt even if there is one snowflake. Cracks me up because I don't exactly live in the warm weather belt. Oh and if you're looking for toilet paper prior to a blizzard, you're outta luck. The stores sell out of everything the day before the stomr hits.

" The lumbering storm dropped more than a foot of snow in Colorado's southwestern mountains Tuesday, with 19 inches at the Wolf Creek ski area and 17 at Durango Mountain Resort. "

"But bad for ranchers who have cattle out."

Ha! Let me take a quick peek...

Nope. After several generations, there still aren't any barns! The Range cattle are acting like all is normal again! This is great break from the miserably warm, almost snowless winter we've been having.

Yes GSG, thank God you're a conservative, not one of the ex-Californians that my brother describes as locusts, thus, "they come, they destroy, they move on." Welcome. Looks like we can use all the help we can get!

I just moved to Fort Collins and I'm solidly conservative.

"A day earlier, the storm had pummeled New Mexico with up to a foot of snow."

LOL! I just mailed my Uncle in New Mexico a Christmas Card today. It said, "Wishing You a White Christmas" because we have NO snowcover here in southern WI (which is odd for this time of year) and I though he'd be in the same shape as we are this year. Oops! ;)

Send some snow Western PA way. We had one hour of real snowfall a cpl of weeks ago and it looks like a brown Christmas. No conclusion to the endless Autumn in sight according to Accuweather.com, rain and 40's through the first of the year.

I live in Western PA -- and I love no snow. You can have it up in the mountains for skiing, but not here in the 'burgh. Puh-leeez! :)

No snow here on Washington Island, across Death's Door Passage from Wisconsin's Door County Peninsula. Glow-bull warning?

Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns. Merry Christmas

Welcome. You are in pretty solid conservative country in Fort Collins. Drive down to Boulder and you'll see a real circus. "The People's Republic of Boulder" is aptly named as you probably know.
