NEW YORK (AP) -- More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past.

Since some are using length of marriage as a criteria in favor of being part of the 5%, I should add that my marriage of 44 years ended with the death of my husband, and my parents were married around 50 years.
If you read this thread, you'll see that some people don't have pre-marital sex.
I find it hard to believe that you've never met anyone who was a virgin before they were married. I grew up in a politically and socially mixed community, and I knew lots of people who did not have pre-marital sex.
You can include gradeschool nowdays.
This country is going to hell in a hurry...
But then again, I wouldn't be pursuing a particular agenda via my research.
Oh, I am sure they have a divorce rate that is bad too considerng the day and age, but I am willing to bet it is better than average by a mile. I do not trust this "poll" either. I don't think I would trust a Poll on the issue. The best way to measure is that of marriages lasting 50+ and then you may have a good measure. After all, they at least are most likely 1st marriages and by their years may have held the higher standard.
I just hope example and teaching will yeild that standard for my children. I neither trust in man or self but God for this. I do not give up hope either.
I know the couples who don't live together before marriage do much better..."
Lived with my husband almost two years before marriage. Married for 44 years. My son lived with his wife for 4 or 5 years before they married. Now together more than 10 years.
Says who, do you think everyone will admit they had sex before being married. Unless you were hancuffed to them you realy don't know.
It always seemed to me that this kind of "study" is as much a waste of time as it is meaningless. Who knows what the figure is? Who cares? We do or should know that many of the people answering the big question have one lying agenda or another.
Perhaps a worthy study might involve whether yes or no furthers the human condition. Even that would require an existential yard stick of meter length.
Does the definition of sex include necking as well as intercourse.
"I believe it. I don't know a single virgin before they were married." ....... I do, I married 2 of them. They are out there, more than you think. They were nice girls until after I married them. But then again, how is virgin defined?
either that, or maybe some large scale character/personality defects. then again, maybe both.
Depends on your definition of the word IS. Just ask BJ Clinton.
Um...you forget the hippies of 40 years ago?
I literally don't know anyone who hasn't. Hell, that even includes grandparents. Wait... I didn't have premarital sex, with another person anyway :p.
Where did they poll - downtown Manhattan, South Beach or Wilshire Blvd?
I notice the story says "premarital". I suspect that many respondents had sex and then married their partners - - that would likely account for a healthy percentage of "premarital". Also, "premarital" infers that the poll was limited to people who eventually did get married - - and that would rule out a lot of present "Americans", including infants and children (of course), grotesque, obese, and sociopathic adults, along with homosexuals and the mentally disabled, among others (including people who simply never found a person to marry or didn't want marriage). The 95% figure is illusory and largely meaningless.
Why wouldn't they admit to it? I can tell where you stand based on your incredibly stupid "the other 5% lied" comment, but give me a break. The overwhelming peer pressure that exists is for people to HAVE sex. People are more likely (especially young men) to lie and say they did lose their virginity than they are to lie and say that they never did that.
Now that would be news...how many couple are having sex after marriage?
