One climber found dead on Mt. Hood
Thanks for all you do. I'm sure there are many who appreciate your efforts. We need more men like you.
Hubby used to kayak, but he didn't have time for that AND flying after he got the plane, so we sold the kayak. I have to admit, it made me SO NERVOUS with all the sharks and jellyfish and all that! Flying is so much safer. Of course, I prefer sitting in my rocking chair, knitting. ;-)
I understand that people get enjoyment from different hobbies/activities.
Forgive me for considering how much anguish this kind of outcome causes so many. Taking risks for productive reasons can be a wonderful--even selfless--thing; but "productive" is the operative word here.
Kelly James made a call to his family last Sunday that reportedly lasted 4 minutes. Some of the comments upthread indicate that he said he was "cold, tired, wet" but not specifically injured, although (understandably) distressed. T-Mobile received a signal from James's phone early last Tuesday.
Not sure why the other two ventured out, but others here have followed events more closely than I have.
It depends on your definition of "productive".
"is"
That's what I think. Why should the government be responsible for people who deliberately put themselves in harm's way? Let 'em climb. But let 'em climb at their own risk. When they climb and if they climb, 'tain't the governments problem if they die trying.
Not rafting but kayaking :) I don't hang glide anymore, but para sailing is almost as fun.
Thanks. I really enjoy outdoor activities, but its not for everyone.
Some of the posts here are rather absurd.
I certainly didn't mean you bannie :) I also feed the wild turkeys in the winter. I get just as much pleasure watching them as I do anything else.
Now if the weather could just get a bit colder so I could go ice climbing :)
What you need to do is fly down to Playa Santispec (South of Mulege in Baja Mexico). They have a wonderful hotel and you can rent kayaks and go snorkeling out in the bay around the little islands. I have never seen any sharks or jellyfish there. You can gather all the butter clams and scallops you want for dinner or just sit and knit on the beach :)
Oh, sure...now I'm a wild turkey and you're planning on feeding me!
;-)
I like cheese enchaladas.
:-D
I feel more sadness for folks who sit life out on the couch...that don't have a passion for life...so afraid of death that they run from the things that might end it.
Most folks I know commit suicide bite by bite (of food, that is). They sit in front of the TV as their arteries fill up with placque.
This climber prepared. He was fit and able...
Life is dangerous. It is most vivid at the edge.
This guy knew very well that this climb might kill him. He was a fighter. He might have died...but he was a winner because he died trying.
Dying ain't the worst thing...living in fear is much worse.
Another stupid response.
why not just respond with a counter argument and get over the childish " you haven't recovered yet..go to your bong."
Yeah, like i want to take on this responsibility like I want to pay for medical expenses for motorcycle riders who don't wear helmets! so, like the other poster said, take out an insurance policy to cover your risk expenses !
You are funny bannie : )
I like cheese enchaladas.
You won't after you try some of our fish tacos :)
I respect your articulate and well thought out reply. I do consider this.
Thanks for a reasoned and helpful reply.
That was very well said. And I agree with Rushmore Rocks, we need more like you...
