Climbers should be required to take out an insurance policy to pay for all of the search & rescue costs if they become lost.
Well, the next time any of you are involved with something that I find idiotic, I will remember your attitude against your fellow man. Gee, I find what you just did idiotic, so too bad.
"But I'm not a mountain climber"
Therein lies the difference. They are risk takers, you are risk adverse. We need both. But perhaps you take other risks. Then you are in the same boat (or on the same mountain) as they are. Risks are risks. Thank goodness some take them or our society would go nowhere fast.
They went for a 2-day hike, expecting cold and maybe a few flurries at most. Seems Old Man Winter threw a big storm at them instead.
Ummm, so what if your driving is not "necessary", i.e. recreational, personal activities that are totally optional, then you are on your own?
if those climbers were lost in a snowstorm while driving to / from their personal, non-essential, recreational climbing activity, do we try to help them? Or do we abandon them *only* once they are on the mountain? Should we have been looking for James Kim while he was out on a personal, non-essential, family drive for holiday?
You definitely misunderstood my post.
I think we should do whatever we can to rescue these people, although my hope is rapidly fading.
If we shouldn't be trying to rescue these people, then at a minimum we should let everyone know that we won't attempt a rescue.
I can only write posts. I can't read them for you.
I have watched the media and the experts responding to the issue, and they tend to agree with you. They have said that these guys, experienced climbers, should have known that you don't attempt to climb Mt. Hood in December.
I misunderstood this:
"IF YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE, TOUGH. WE WILL LAUGH AT YOU AND LET YOU DIE AND MAYBE RECOVER YOUR BODY IN MARCH"
we will laugh at you and let you die was misunderstood?
maybe recover your body in March was misunderstood?
Nothing in your post said anything about rescue.
Climbers should be required to take out an insurance policy to pay for all of the search & rescue costs if they become lost.
I am sure it would be hard to find an insurance company that would be willing to take on that kind of risk. If you could, the premiums would be very costly!
Just curious: Do you have any passion? For anything? Some folks really love horseback riding, but look what happened to Christopher Reeve! Just getting on the back of a horse to run really fast and jump over stuff is a vanity. That's what it is!
Private pilots with decades of experience have met their fate flying a small airplane. Some, with little experience. Private flying is not "a necessity". JFK, Jr. could still be with us if he hadn't decided to learn to pilot his own aircraft.
There are many things in life that aren't "necessities". Living to the fullest, however, is indeed a necessity to most lovers of life.
Not really sad for the climber? Sure it is. And if he'd known it would kill him in his prime and bring agony to his loved ones, I don't think he'd have loved it most, either. Some of his last coherent thoughts were probably that he shouldn't have loved it at all.
You certainly can't criticize anyone who wants to rescue these men. No sane person can really want them to die for deciding to climb a mountain.
The question can be fairly asked how much money and how much risk to other men you take to attempt a rescue, which is probably going to be futile anyway.
It's already a tragic story. I hope it doesn't get worse.
Who said it was?
I said, if a climbing permit is required, and if the permit says ...
Hypotheticals shouldn't be too difficult for Freepers.
Fair enough. I thought I had been agreeing with some of your comments earlier on the thread. But, I found the suggestion over the line.
Methinks you haven't fully recovered yet, hippie.
Tell you what. I'll take your share of the responsibility. You go back to your bong.
Old Joke: I'm launching a space mission to the SUN!
Are you crazy? You'll be burned alive!
Ahhhhh but I have a secret....I'm going at NIGHT!
Lets restrict our silly snow debates to North american climates please.
The poster is naturally correct. Snow is worse in winter. I don't care what side of the mountain you are on.
