I wish we could have someone with familiarity in this sort of thing could stop by and tell us whether the U.S. handles it the way the Europeans do: "If you want to go, go. Your insurance-rider is xx euro. What? You do not wish to pay? Then you will pay the Air Force for your rescue."

You certainly can't criticize anyone who wants to rescue these men. No sane person can really want them to die for deciding to climb a mountain.
The question can be fairly asked how much money and how much risk to other men you take to attempt a rescue, which is probably going to be futile anyway.
It's already a tragic story. I hope it doesn't get worse.
