Colleges to stop giving tuition breaks to illegals
Ledger Enquirer ^ | 12/16/2006

ATLANTA - High-performing students who grew up in Georgia but are undocumented immigrants soon won't qualify for discounted tuition at state colleges.

The change is necessary to comply with the state's new aggressive immigration laws that went into effect in July, said Burns Newsome, attorney for the Georgia Board of Regents. It means students who have high grades but are in the country illegally will have to pay the much higher out-of-state tuition rates rather than being allowed to pay in-state tuition.

Sen. Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, architect of the tough immigration laws, said the state should not subsidize the education of student who won't be able to work legally after graduation. The policy shift also wards off any potential lawsuits that have plagued states like California and New York, he said.

"Georgia doesn't need to be put through that," he said.

But others say the change will only hurt communities where high school drop out rates are high and college attendance rates are paltry at best.

"It's unconscionable to punish children for the sins of their parents," said State Sen. Sam Zamarripa, D-Atlanta, who fought against the immigration laws. "This initiative is essentially going after kids that are more Georgian than anybody who has moved here in the past five years. They like boiled peanuts. They like southern rock. They like the Braves."

It is unclear how many students will be affected because the Regents don't track the number of illegal immigrants at state colleges.

This year, in-state students pay $1,819 per semester to attend the Georgia State University, compared to the $7,276 per semster that out-of-state students pay. Tuition varies by institution.

Ten states offer in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, according to the National Council of La Raza. Many of those states have faced lawsuits from U.S. citizens paying out-of-state tuition rates.

Good. More buckling down on lawbreakers will help!
I never thought this was fair for those who are citizens of the US.

They say you can't deport 12 million illegals (or whatever the estimate is now), but if you continue to remove the reasons they are staying/coming to the US illegally, seems logical that many of them will go home or somewhere else (yoohoo, Canada?!) because they can't find work, places to live, free medical care, free food stamps, etc. here any more.

Yeah, how dare you punish kids whose parents were in the state legally.

Money you spend on illegal aliens is money you can't spend on those individuals who (and whose parents) follow the rules and behave according to the law.

Wait a minute, isn't that,...well,..."illegal"?

What about their "feelings"? Their "self-esteem"?

Pretty soon, they'll be trying to stop Islamofascists from nuking NYC and other extreme things like that. I hope CAIR doesn't hear about this. They need more trained pilots.

Do I need a sarcasm alert here?

If you are going to give in state tuition rates to illegals, then you should give them to everyone, no matter what state they are from.

Why should a student from Maryland ,going to school in Atlanta pay a higher tuition rate than an illegal from Guatamala? That doesnt even make sense.

This treats a symptom, not a cause.

If someone is raised in the US as an American, *and* they have lived in a particular State all their lives, *and* they have good grades, *and* the only thing keeping them from fully integrating as a contributing member of our society is their citizenship status, well HELL, fast-track those kids to become US citizens!

It is utter nonsense to keep hard-working, successful people *out* of the US or to keep them from education or employment that benefits us all. Just as it is utter nonsense to force such people to spend the ten or twenty of the most productive years of their lives having to fight to get citizenship, so that they will only finally become citizens just in time to retire.

And don't even tell me that by keeping out an ethnic Mexican but otherwise totally American kid from being trained as an architect, it will suddenly make the offspring of Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson a brilliant research scientist in his place.

Now don't get me wrong. I strongly believe that States shouldn't give illegals in-State tuition. What I do believe is if the kids are Americanized in all other ways, they *should* get fast-tracked to citizenship ASAP, without their having to leave the US to do so.

I know several "illegal" kids who came to the US as infants, know nothing of Mexico and know no one in Mexico, don't speak Spanish very well, have gotten good grades in high school and want to go to college. They are Americans in every sense of the word but one--citizenship.

It is as utterly ridiculous to demand that they go to Mexico to get their US citizenship in ten years, as it would be to demand the same thing of some white kid whose family name is Smith. And anyone who has kids here should feel the same. No way in heck would they send their kids off to live in a foreign country for ten or twenty years just because they don't have a piece of paper.

The contempt these people demonstrate for Americans is an outrage.

They always have an arrogant smirk on their faces---especially when they're caught crossing the border, It's like they're saying, " I'm screwing you big time Americano. Youse are paying for me 24/7."

They are the "hyphenated protected class." Even telling the truth is considered a "hate crime."

They have their own ADL-type bunch of bullies lurking in the shadows, conducting surveillance on Americans, waiting to stomp on and annihilate anyone who dares cross them.

Notice that they and only they dictate the terms of their victimization. If you say "and" instead of "but", or look at them crosseyed, they rise up and invoke their so-called "rights."

That means you are toast.....a "racist pariah."

These people are a ticking timebomb in our culture---you never know what's going to set them off.

fast-track those kids to become US citizens

I doubt that the state of Georgia has the ability to fast-track people in a federal program. Maybe you could recruit these children into the US military and have them earn scholarship money which could be used to pay the higher tuition. Then the citizens of Georgia would not have to pay for the problems the US government refuses to handle.

Inasmuch as one can easily, in good conscience, and without having to rationalize away illegal behavior--as you do--hold an opinion contrary to yours, phrases like your "utterly ridiculous" hold no water, and are nothing more than someone attempting to call attention to himself and his aberant ridicule.

That is what makes me so mad. I pay out of state tuition here in Texas, although my hubby works as a teacher for one of the school districts outside of Dallas. I think it is so unfair that illegals can get in state tuiton, but I am a US born citizen and can't get the same treatment. The problem is illegals get better treatment than US born citizens.

That's a good reason to sue. Why should citizens be discriminated against vis a vis foreigners? It's unconstitutional. Violation of the equal protection clause.

If Sen. Sam Zamarripa wants to go on that road, than why should students who live in Mississippi pay out of state tuition for Georgia. Why punish the students because their parents made the choice to live in Mississippi? Most high school kids (unless their parents make a lot of money or they get a very good scholarship) parents can't afford to send their kids to an out of state school. Out of state tuition at some schools is extremely high. An old neighbor could only afford to send their kid to universities in Louisiana (state of residence), but the daughter really wanted to go to University of Washington and her parents could not afford it.

Money you spend on illegal aliens is money you can't spend on those individuals who (and whose parents) follow the rules and behave according to the law.

More to the point, slots going to illegals means that qualified American citizens don't get in. Particularly when you take into account that Hispanic illegals, although not getting in-state tuition, are still going to be admitted under Affirmative Action ahead of higher-qualified whites

But it's perfectly ok to punish the state taxpayers, right?

What a tule.
