Water Still Flows in Brief Spurts on Mars
NASA ^ | Dec 6, 2006 | NASA

NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years.

"These observations give the strongest evidence to date that water still flows occasionally on the surface of Mars," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Washington

Thanks I've been lurking for a while and decided that given all that is going on I needed an outlet to vent. :)

"Earth is over a billion years old.. Explain the fossils that over a million years old..."

Actually, it's over five billion years old, and even at that, it's made of leftover stuff from even earlier stars.

I can find no justification for believing the Earth is less than a million years old that wouldn't work just as well for it's being only twenty minutes old, or maybe a hundred years.

Earth is either old, really old, or we are all just fancy computer program characters, chasing edibles, and being pursued by ghosts.

I will tell you why. Searching for "life on other planets" is another attempt by science to undermime religion and push evolution. How many billions or trilions have been spent to convince people not to believe the Bible?

Did you really go to all the trouble to join up today just to poat something as stupid as that?

You left out the word "not", I think.

As in, "... my faith will not be questioned!"

Oh, you're a REAL class act. I'm just sad the lady's not near enough to belt you across the chops with her fully-loadad purse; although she seems too nice to venture taking you down the peg or two your outburst warrants.

Geesh. Now, quit acting like an overdeveloped slime-mold and GO APOLOGIZE.

Kids these days...

I KNOW!

It's a waterslide!!

Boy, we've REALLY got to get there now; there's already a waterpark built. Right there at the base of the crater, too. Plenty of good, flat territory around for local hotels, restaurants, a mini golf course, full-blown five-start resort and spa, big PGA course...

And a spaceport -- can't forget the spaceport.

Oh, man, my internal real estate investor is goin nuts!

Maybe Art Linkletter can get a second chance...

LOL. Earth isn't even a million years old. But there is no sense in us arguing. Look at www.icr.org.

Why look at them? They are doing apologetics (defense of religion), not science.

Groups like this often have a "statement of belief" to which members must adhere.

For example, the Creation Research Society has the following on their home page:

The Creation Research Society is a professional organization of trained scientists and interested laypersons who are firmly committed to scientific special creation. The Society was organized in 1963 by a committee of ten like-minded scientists, and has grown into an organization with an international membership.

Here is what else they say.

CRS Statement of Belief

All members must subscribe to the following statement of belief:

1. The Bible is the written Word of God, and because it is inspired throughout, all its assertions are historically and scientifically true in the original autographs. To the student of nature this means that the account of origins in Genesis is a factual presentation of simple historical truths.

2. All basic types of living things, including man, were made by direct creative acts of God during the Creation Week described in Genesis. Whatever biological changes have occurred since Creation Week have accomplished only changes within the original created kinds.

3. The great flood described in Genesis, commonly referred to as the Noachian Flood, was an historic event worldwide in its extent and effect.

4. We are an organization of Christian men and women of science who accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The account of the special creation of Adam and Eve as one man and one woman and their subsequent fall into sin is the basis for our belief in the necessity of a Savior for all mankind. Therefore, salvation can come only through accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior.

Does this sound like science to you? Does this sound like research?

Any time preconceived beliefs, such as these, override the scientific method, an individual is doing apologetics, not science. It doesn't matter what scientific degrees one may have; to agree to a set of standards such as this, which is common (whether explicit or implicit) in creationist circles, is to cease doing science.

Just think how far you could throw a snowball!

Football on Mars, basketball on Mars ...

... and it's a loooong hook shot, looping over Deimos, banking off Phobos, back down and ... nothing but net!! An incredible shot!!

Sticking with the amusement park angle:
What would the difference in gravity do to roller-coaster designs? How high could you make the BIG "Oh-my-freakin---aaaaiiiieeeee" and keep the tram velocity under 100kmh??

And, of course with transportation, being just a short hop away takes on a different meaning.

Shakes head sadly. You are beyond clueless.

But keep in mind that posts like this are why I advocate keeping government out of the human exploration part of the process. To qualify as a government activity, whatever you're doing has to be totally safe, morally acceptable to the Union of "Concerned" "Scientists", must be approved by the creationists, follow affirmative action guidelines. and be acceptable under a twentieth-century treaty made with a country that no longer exists.

Simply put, don't you think if there was life on other planets out there, it would be mentioned in Genesis! LOL. It would be a pretty big deal, right?

When Genesis was written, the idea of other worlds besides Earth was still centuries in the future. The other planets were nothing more than bright points of light that circled an unmoving Earth that was the center of the universe.

I exaggerated the basketball some.

I guess you could make your roller-coaster much grander in scale, but with .34 gravity it would not accelerate downward like an Earth roller-coaster.

Sports might be phenomenal, but most folks won't be able to perform at such levels. Outside activities on Mars, for the foreseeable future, will have to be in pressure suits, with air tanks.

Indoor could be different. Anyone could be a Johnny Weismuller swimmer on Mars, with his entire upper torso out of the water as he stroked across the river.

Transportation should be relatively easy to establish. Monorails could be set up with lighter structures.

I would think that most cities would be built underground. the "city that never sleeps" on Mars will not be worried about daylight.
