I disagree. If NYC bans something based on local demography (leftists concentrated in Manhattan) and if Americans in Oklahoma can safely eat whatever the hell they want, and Californians can eat whatever tofu they want, then in my opinion, unlike Brussels or DC forcing uniformity--the Republic is still working in this small case like it's supposed to.

Unfortunately, it lends credibility to stupidity and that is never a good thing for the Republic. Policy like this should always be based on sound science instead of political agendas, regardless of where you live.

No, just high fructose corn syrup (hfcs). This was somewhat of a tongue-in-cheek comment, as I have seen no definitive medical studies showing that hfcs is a health issue, but anecdotal evidence has been presented asserting that the growth in the use of hfcs (since it was introduced in the 1970s) ties closely with the growth of obesity in the US.
I think that in time there will be peer-reviewed articles demonstrating the correlation, and that at that time they will be pulled off the market amid class action lawsuits brought against the manufacturers/distributors involved. However, that time is not today.
School districts everywhere are doing just that.
First it was no homebaked/homemade food for parties because.. "because, well, we don't know where it came from and the Health Department hasn't approved your kitchen". The Soccer Moms were all fine with that because they couldn't cook anyway. Now the fricken state is dictating what can and cannot be served in school cafeterias. That, after years of outsourcing food to places like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut and building schools with minimal kitchen facilities. The most some of the new schools can do it put stuff in the warming tray.
Funny because 10 years ago when they started that B/S I called the district ranting and raving. A friend who worked for the district told me to be careful because they do record telephone conversations with trouble makers.

But at least that's how a Republic is supposed to work. State by state legislature/council vote. Not top-down judicial oligarchy by-fiat.
What you guys describe is also correct. Stupid people are making stupid decisions---state by state. And no doubt, we are probably not far away from FDA b.s. mandating it one way or another (I heard a story today about a switch from high fructose corn syrup to a 'more healthy' cane sugar. Jeez.)
But this is just a normal problem with letting stupid people govern themselves. It's not indicative of a nanny-sate or fascism per se.
Unless we unlink education from federal (and lawyer) control, it doesn't matter what the particular issues are. The looters are coming!

yeah, well - maybe you never had a child that got sick or had a milk allergy reaction to food some parent brought in for the homebake party.
alot of these regulations wouldn't be needed if businesses acted responsibly. but they don't. they would cook your food in reprocessed urine, if they could figure out a way to make it taste good and it accrued to their bottom line profit.

The board also voted unanimously to allow dogs to run without leashes at certain parks between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. The proposal had been put out for public comment after some residents complained it was dangerous to have dogs running around in public places. But officials say out of 15,000 comments, only 2,000 were in opposition.
Another measure that would have allowed transgender people to amend their birth certificates without having undergone surgery was voted down.
The board unanimously backed up the current policy that requires proof of sex reassignment surgery.
Transgender advocates say tens of thousands of New Yorkers face severe and pervasive discrimination as a result of their inability to obtain identification matching the gender in which they live.
They say simple things like entering buildings can be difficult because their ID's don't match their looks, and that many cannot afford the expensive surgical procedures needed. Advocates are vowing to continue their fight to change the policy.
So you're on board with the mayor? How do you protect your child from the processed food brought in from who knows what food service that may or may not have a current Health Inspection certificate?
