Gates ... I'm not smart enough or informed enough to give an answer to that question
Oh Good Lord

I agree with almost everything you just said. Therein lies my frustration with the administration and the progress of this war. Unfortunately, Gates is just an uncontroversial stopgap for the President, and I expect nothing drastic will change. What it tells me is that this administration is lined up to punt this war to Bush's successor. There won't be a "cut and run" (thank God), but there also won't be a hammer to bring down on the insurgency.
Whether or not we agree or disagree about the current state of affairs in Iraq, I think we both agree that, at this stage, this is a most perplexing nomination.

A weak America plays good to Americans, it means the world will love us again, Americans cannot take criticism, they start to feel guilty.
Like the world really LOVED US WHEN WE WERE DYING ON 9/11.
Which is why they voted for the Dems, who like us as victims, weak, and not better than anyone else, non aggressive, bullies, confrontational or willing to use military power.
Obviously Republicans got the message.
No more war, be nice, don't cause trouble with the head-choppers, just arrest them, and please, please, stop all the arguing and criticism, it makes us uncomfortable.
We are standing down.

I can dream that the President is handing the MSM/DNC a pretty face, while he and his generals are planning to win.
We shall see, he may have accepted the writing on the wall from the elections, but of course will not surrender in public to enemy, so he is doing it thru this appointment.
Again, he cannot fight the propaganda of suicide bombs alone, and with the enemy DNC stacked with traitors in our bureaucracies, (which were in action BEFORE Iraq), apposing him at every turn, he cannot win.

That answer about not smart enough or informed enough...perked MY ears up, also....yikes.
Notice that Susan Collins was the ONLY one brave enough to actually come out and ask Gates if he would just cut and run.
All of the dems have danced around that question...too chicken to ask...LOL

I think that Gates was putting out a positive spin when he said we were merely losing in Iraq. The fact of the matter is that we have already LOST. Dubya's nomination of Harriet Gates for SecDef is proof positive.
I think it is time for Dubya to start clearing the underbrush in Crawford, TX on a FULL time basis. This is a disgrace.

Gates seemed receptive to creating a 'Get Bin Laden' Lottery --- increasing the reward by $1 Million per week.

" Now Pat Roberts says he has no doubt Gates will "speak truth to power!"
When Pat Roberts starts talking like Maureen Dowd-I shudder.
The crowd that runs DC-unfortunately, on both sides of the aisle, is a national embarrassment.
The few exceptions get kicked to the curb or are isolated and ridiculed.
Every time I see one of these hearings-I shake my head at the vacuous suits running Congress.
Are these people the best we can do ?
God help us all.
