What she didn't realize is that some idiot notary public had applied for asylum on her behalf earlier and hadn't given the right address for her. That led to the deportation order when she didn't get or respond to any of the USCIS notices subsequently sent to her.
If an immigrant marries a U.S. citizen, the marriage never gives citizenship, but it's supposed to give instant legal residency, with a green card. After receiving the green card, she needs to wait five years, get a background check, and take the test, to get American citizenship.

My English mother married a US citizen..but she did not become a citizen just by marying him..she had to go to classes and she had to take a citizenship test..then she had to take an oath of citizenship. Where did you ever learn that citizens are automatic if they marry US citizens?
No. I have a friend who married a Chinese lady and while she has her green card, she still has to take the test to become a citizen.
