Cintas warned against firing immigrant force

A Mississippi Democrat in line to become chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee has warned the nation's largest uniform supplier it faces criminal charges if it follows a White House proposal to recheck workers with mismatched Social Security numbers and fire those who cannot resolve the discrepancy in 60 days. Rep. Bennie Thompson said in a letter to Cintas Corp. it could be charged with "illegal activities in violation of state and federal law" if any of its 32,000 employees are terminated because they gave incorrect Social Security numbers to be hired. "I am deeply troubled by Cintas' recent policy change regarding the Social Security Administration's 'no match' letters," Mr. Thompson said in the Nov. 2 letter. "It is my understanding that hundreds of Cintas' immigrant workers have received these letters. I am extremely concerned about any potentially discriminatory actions targeting this community." In June, President Bush proposed new guidelines concerning "no-match" letters from the Social Security Administration, saying he wanted to make it easier for employers to verify workers' eligibility and continue to hold them accountable for those they hire.

In addition to being in the United States illegally, immigrants are using fake social security numbers.

Possible Homeland Security Committee Chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson, Democrat, response to this illegal activity (punish the corporation which is trying to do the right thing?)

Sounds like CINTAS needs to contact the Justice Department for a interpretation of the laws. Don't see how you can commit a crime by taking action required in order not to commit a crime. Somewhere George Orwell is smiling.

If you expect the Justice Department to stand up to a Democrat politician, you are mistaken.

it could be charged with "illegal activities in violation of state and federal law"

Wow! Now there's a clear cut case of law breaking if there ever was one. "illegal activities", well we don't want to be charged with that, now do we? I don't suppose that will extend to those using fake social security numbers?

Well this is a smooth piece of legal maneuvering by Cintas, from the article:

"Cintas has not terminated any employees due to the Social Security mismatches and plans to continue its policy of placing these employees on indefinite leave until they produce the required documentation."

That way they can't be sued for termination, no one is terminated, just permanently on leave, I like it.

Your comment summarizes something I've thought for years. What about the 14th Amendment and equal treatment under the law? Clearly if you're a law breaker who is part of a desirable voting group that a politician is courting, you're more special than the rest of the barnyard.

IOW, there IS unequal treatment under the law, and it's not going to go away as long as the politicians see a potential group of new voters to be gained. Our rights be damned.

The insanity continues. Employment term generally include dismissal if the applicant gives false information on their application. Providing a fake SS# should definitely fall under that category. Add to that the fact that use of a fake or stolen SS# is a felony (fraud).

If this idiot lifts a finger to prevent the law from being enforced, he should be arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting known felons.

Ha...just exactly what do you think would be happening any differently on this issue had we kept majority? NOTHING!! Bush is an OBLer and he is the one spearheading the campaign for CIR. Will it be tougher because because Bush is with the Dims on this issue, yes, but the bipartisan OBL agenda would have moved forward regardless. It is up to us to unite as a party, with or without Bush, and to stop them before this travesty is allowed to move forward.

Ahh, in which case, those known felons are illegal aliens and INS law, since 1996, may make him/them subject to RICO prosecution.

Since when does a congressman write to a legitimate bussiness, that has a legitimate concern, and threaten the business with his interpretation of the law? WTF!

And this guy's in line to be head of homeland security.

I wouldn't even let him in the clown car much less drive it!
