The question of whether we need a universal military draft will be important as long as this country is placing thousands of young men and women in harm's way in Iraq. As long as Americans are being shipped off to war, then everyone should be vulnerable, not just those who, because of economic circumstances, are attracted by lucrative enlistment bonuses and educational incentives. Even before the first bomb was dropped, before the first American casualty, I have opposed the war in Iraq. I continue to believe that decision-makers would never have supported the invasion if more of them had family members in line for deployment.
Those who do the fighting have no choice; when the flag goes up, they salute and follow orders. So far, more than 2,800 have died and 21,000 have been wounded. They are our unrecognized American heroes.
The great majority of people bearing arms for this country in Iraq are from the poorer communities in our inner cities and rural areas, places where enlistment bonuses are up to $40,000 and thousands in educational benefits are very attractive. For people who have college as an option, those incentives - at the risk to one's life - don't mean a thing.

Democrat Plan Summarized in One Word: Draft
by Scott Ott
(2006-11-20) Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, yesterday unveiled the Democrat plan for boosting the minimum wage, providing free healthcare to millions more Americans, increasing college attendance, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing future U.S. wars of aggression.
Our plan is so simple and elegant that it can be stated in one word draft, said Rep. Rangel. By implementing a military draft, well provide a living wage and free healthcare to our new involuntary soldiers and their families, plus well give them college money after their term of service.
The New York Democrat, who has proposed a draft several times before, said taking many of the 18-to-26 year-olds off the nations highways will decrease the number of automobile fatalities and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The most crucial element of the Draft America Plan, he said, is creation of a huge military force comprised of less-motivated troops in case the president must decide whether to go to war with North Korea or Iran, or to expand the global war on terror in other lands.
Right now, its the skill and passion of our all-volunteer force that gives George Bush the arrogance to challenge our enemies on their soil, Rep. Rangel said. With a military full of reluctant conscripts, Bush wont be so cocky. Well be safer because, as we all know, when American troops stay home fewer terrorists are created.
This is his core argument.
Factually, it is demonstrably false.
Logically, if it were true it would still not justify a draft.
That's it, plain and simple.
If Rangel is so upset that the military, as it is, penalizes the poorer guys in our society and protects the richer kids from serving, let me ask a question.
Why doesn't wily old Charlie protest the efforts by liberal wackos to keep military recruiters off many prestigious university campuses where they could reach many of those "rich kids"?
Charlie is being a lying con artist on this.
Charlie is more full of sh*t than tomorrow's Thanksgiving turkey.
Uh, Charlie, your plan was already brought up for a vote. YOU VOTED NO ON YOUR OWN BILL. Shut up already.
Rangel--Another race-baiter/pimp, and a deluded Korean War Vet who should be seen by the VA for his mental problems: Racism, and the illusion that the Draft would solve any problem.
did charlie ever say why he didn't want the draft in the 1960's?
SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS
While this is probably true, when in the history of this country has their even been a draft you couldn't buy, beg, or bum your way out of? Or is Rangel proposing a draft with zero exemptions? If not, all he's doing is drawing unwilling poor people into the meat grinder. How is that more fair?
Those who do the fighting have no choice; when the flag goes up, they salute and follow orders.
No one made them enlist, and stop-loss notwithstanding, no one keeps them in past the end of their contract. If you want to take the tax free reup money, it's your choice.
How about the "Gays in the Military" question?
Wonder how that plays out when the draft is re-instituted.
And women...???
Draft them too?
We always use the 'bread-based' stuffing... :)

Ex-Military CEOs Outperform S&P 500 Index
http://www.taonline.com/e-news/Employer_Insight_Issue3.asp#Article2
Kennedy's Executive Recruiter News reports companies helmed by CEOs with a military background have outperformed the S&P 500 Index by as much as 20% over the past three, five and 10-year periods, says a study by Korn/Ferry International. Military Experience and CEOs: Is There a Link? published by Korn/Ferry in cooperation with the Economist Intelligence Unit also finds that ex-military CEOs tend to last longer in the job, with an average tenure of 7.2 years, while CEOs without military experience have an average tenure of 4.6 years. In addition, the study finds that the 59 companies on the S&P 500 headed by ex-military CEOs provide an average annual shareholder return of 21% over the three year period ending September 2005, versus 11% for the S&P 500 Index during the same time. For a five-year period, the ex-military CEOs provided a 9.5% return while the Index provided a 10.7% return. For a ten-year period, the ex-military CEOs provided a 12.2% return versus a 9.4% return for the S&P 500 Index. Moreover, the study suggests that CEOs with military experience commanding deft management of stressful situations during military operations may well enhance performance in a corporate environment.
Hey scumbag... the only ones that don't "recognize American heroes" are sorry ares twerps like you. NO ONE has forced any of these "heroes: to 'V~O~L~U~N~T~E~E~R'" to fight hence they DID and DO have a choice.
Rome's burning folks.
Beneath that painted on smile beats the heart of a flaming racist caught in a time warp.
Poor, old Charlie...off his meds...again. Nobody really takes this moron seriously, but, like Ronald McDonald, he has an audience to play to.
