SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - U.S. Coast Guards have seized a submarine carrying 3.5 tons of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean off Costa Rica and arrested three Colombians on board, the Costa Rican Coast Guard said on Sunday.

The submarine appeared to be a makeshift vessel unlike military submarines or those used by oceanographers. It could only submerge 6 feet under water, Costa Rican Coast Guard spokesman Jose Antonio Fallas told Reuters.

" The 45-foot-long vessel was found last Wednesday near the remote Coco Island, southwest of the Central American mainland, and had traveled hundreds of miles from Colombia on its way to the United States."

That's all I wanted to know. Where was it headed?

Driving a DIY submarine is a good way to get dead. I wonder how many smugglers got killed before they got it right?

And this isn't the first time subs have been used to smuggle coke in...and arms out.

It strikes me as a too smart by half idea on how to smuggle coke. Not being a nuke, it would have to spend most of its time surfaced, where it would stand out like a sore thumb and attract a HUGE amount of law enforcement attention. It seems to me that an ordinary yacht, of the kind people sail around all the time, would be a lot less likely to be noticed, absent a tip-off.

The subs don't make the whole trip under their own power. They are towed through international waters and then make the final run in for deliver.

Even so, a ship towing a 45 foot sub would stand out like a sore thumb. My own preference would be to use an ordinary, inconspicuous sail boat, drop the "package" at night in water 30 or 40 feet deep, and give the GPS coordinates to people on land who'd make the pickup.

Can't carry enough, and takes too long. The scope of the business requires more volume. Additionally, people charged with tens of millions in goods who will pay with their lives if its lost, will not let it out of their sight. Remember also that money has to be moved as well.

Especially when it's depth is only 6 feet below the surface. Any transiting frieghter's bow would have sliced through it like cheese.

The porn industry lives off cocaine.

Not to mention much of Hollyweird and the music industry.
