You don't watch Fox News Channel? Or are you cable and dish deprived?

CSI
Law and Order (all)

Reba
American Idol (A show that can be watched by all family members)
Wife Swap (Too funny)

That's the majority of what we watch and Fox News for updates.

143 posts, and nobody has mentioned The Unit.

Did I wander into DU?

I was born in 1943. Most FReepers can do the math.

I was born at the tail end of the supposed Boomers (and I remember "The Night Chicago Died" much better than Elvis!) but I am an authentic curmudgeon as far as TV goes, so I guess I fit in. My husband watches a lot of the History Channel (me not so much), and I tend to watch old b&w movies. (And now that I've discovered Netflix, there's no holding me back!)

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Arrested Development -- that was our favorite show, bar none, for the three seasons it survived. We are currently working our way through the DVD's of Northern Exposure and HBO's Rome series. (Which has way too much sex, and some of the history is spurious -- but they have done a terrific job of capturing what I always imagined the *feel* of Old Rome to be.)

Oh, and my "guilty pleasure" is American Idol! I can feel my IQ shedding points every time I watch it, but who cares? :)

I was wondering about that too, we enjoy The Unit also. My grandkids, ages 10, 6 & 4, would rather watch the old re-runs of "I Love Lucy" and other old shows than anything that is offered currently!

Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica...you get the point.

Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, South Park and the odd Discovery, History Channel or Animal Planet special.

Some one needs to tell these dolts its not just TV we don't like. Clothing and shoes are geared for 16-24 year olds...well being over 40 I don't think I'm going to wear tops where my midrif shows or look like maternity tops or ripped up jeans that cost a fortune. Or shoes that have heels that are 4 inches high and look like something my grandma wore only these sport lace or studs.

The crowning era of TV --reality shows, mom-swapping, I wanna be a dancer, I wanna be a rock star, I wanna be a pop star, I wanna pick the suitcase with the money, I wanna dump my girlfriend, I wanna dump my boyfriend, I wanna I wanna I wanns. Add to that Jerry, Maury (I slept with my sister, He's my baby daddy, 1000%; Judge Judy, Divorce Court, Girls Gone Wild).....

Looks to me like the trappings of a pretty sick culture.....

Speaking of commercials, the ones I like now are the Holiday Inn commercials that show the same three guys on a business trip/conference.

I like many of the TV shows you mention (24 is my top fav.). I'd add 'Shark' and 'Numb3rs' to my own list of good shows.

One must always search out out the good from the dreck on TV, but I think it's always been that way. When we think back, we remember great shows from the past, such as 'Cheers' or 'Mary Tyler Moore'. We forget clunkers (IMHO) such as 'My Favorite Martian' or 'Mr. Ed' (how many times can 'Wiiiilbur' be a funny line?).

Re, your list--I agree! Prison Break is amazing... Lost, Ghost Whisperer, House. Veronica Mars is fantastic. I like Bones, too.

There's a lot of great tv out there.

A rare instance where the second take is better than the first. At first, I wondered what the Sci-Fi channel was doing resurrecting a show from the 70's like BSG. The new version is better looking visually than the original, the acting is better and the plots are full of interesting twists and turns. What a great series.

I think you just said it. Too much reality stuff now, that is actually not too realistic. I miss the stories, like miniseries used to do. TV used to be a way to get away from daily life for awhile, now it embodies the absolute worst of it.

Screw TV. What about radio? I live in a sizeable market and there is not a single 'Oldies' format FM station here. I'm not a Boomer myself (Gen-X, born in '75) but I like the music of the '60s better than anything else available.

As a tail-end boomer/gen-Wer (not quite Xer :-) I find most TV programming inane and unwatchable. Then again, it mya hev more to do with having a higher-than-freezing IQ.

Discovery, History, some Sci-Fi channel, and an occasional football game. Oh - and America's Funniest Videos is usually fairly watchable ;-P
