ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- An ambitious teenager in Rochester Hills, Mich., is ranked as the 18th amateur in the world to create nuclear fusion -- combining atoms to create energy.
The Detroit Free Press reported that 17-year-old Thiago Olson set up a machine in his parents' garage and has been working exhaustively for more than two years. His machine creates nuclear fusion on a small scale.

The State Department claims that "the teen is not close to achieving nuclear fusion".
To: Lancey Howard
He'll put his eye out with that thing.

Anyone can set up a deuterium boiler. The kid in this article is clearly no
David Hahn.

The teen traded the machine to his friend Ahmad for a Red Rider BB rifle.

Some kids like physics and some like chemistry. As long as they are happy, that's what's important.

While I try to maintain an open mind about these kinds of things I don't understand how admitting deuterium into a vacuum and applying an electrical charge would overcome the mutual repulsion of the electron clouds surrounding the atoms much less the mutual repulsion of the protons in the nucleus once the electron cloud was overcome. Either some details are missing here or Hydrogen isn't really being converted into Helium as it is in the stars.

Looks like nonsense to me, judging by the story. It takes a lot more attraction than you get from electric charges to get the NUCLEI to fuse.
