The Christmas shopping season is upon us and it seems that we have won the opening skirmish it the war with secularism to stamp out Christmas. Walmart have agreed to let Christmas back into their stores this year. That is great news but I am sure it is the power of the almighty dollar rather than the Almighty himself that drove them to that decision, but then, God does move in mysterious ways.
This year I am going shopping prepared and I invite you to join me in the campaign.
I am going to carry a number of letters, sealed in envelopes and addressed to the Store Manager. Any time I don't find any evidence of Christmas celebration in a store I will give the manager a letter and leave.
Here is what the letter says:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I came to your store today with the express purpose of spending a significant percentage of my $XXXX (put what you like in here) Christmas shopping budget.
However I note that your store chooses to no longer participate in the celebration of Christmas and therefore you dont qualify to receive my Christmas dollars.
A quintessential part of Christmas is the sharing of the joy of giving and doing so in festive Christmas environment, it is estimated 95% of Americans celebrate the holiday and fortunately for them, and I, there are many other stores that embrace the Christmas spirit.
My Christmas spending, as I am certain many others, will be done with those that wish to share the spirit of holiday. Should you ever decide to participate again I will consider returning as a customer, until that time, ALL my business goes elsewhere.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXXX
Merry Christmas
If a substantial number of people did this, maybe the message that Walmart got would reach the other retail outlets and perhaps we could get our Christmas back into the public square. If the stores all start decorating for Christmas again do you not think think they will pressure the municipality to decorate the streets appropriately?
This year, Prescott AZ has street banners on downtown lamp posts declaring "Prescott, Your Christmas City" I might just take a trip there to do my Christmas shopping.
It's a good idea. Also, send a Christmas card with a Virgin and Child stamp, or a Ronald Reagan stamp to the ACLU.
Wish them a peaceful and happy Christmas.
As usual, I'll be delivering 2 dozen donuts twice a week to the VA hospital. If I can get in to SLC mid Dec, I'll probably volunteer a few days. Those guys really need the help during the Christmas season.
Best Buy sucks, I wouldn't pi** in their parking lot.
Of course you can tell who their adds are targeted for, the young generation and the homosexuals.
"does Target have the Salvation Army this year?"
I don't think they will let the bell ringers in front, but I believe they were working on a donation program/grant to that organization.
If the retail store doesn't say: "MERRY CHRISTMAS" I don't shop there, I don't care if I have to die without what they have, die I will......
Any time I see a newspaper in our area that has some opinion of why we SHOULDN'T say Merry Christmas, I send in another opinion as to why we should....
If we boycott the retailers that won't say merry christmas, then they'll get the message....as the saying goes: "More bang for your buck".....
I hope not. I can't stand the bell ringing and specifically avoid places that have it.
Oh yes, the 8th wonder of the world is that no matter what Walmart does or doesn't do, it is worthy of them being chastised for it.
Myself, I wouldn't shop there if they condemned Christmas OR promoted it.
I just didn't like shopping there when I went there.
Christmas is not only a Christian holiday. It was made a FEDERAL holiday in 1870.
So to not use the word "Christmas" in order not to offend other religions' followers in the United States, is silly. It is a government recognized holiday, that is called, by act of Congress, Christmas.
People need to be informed of this. It's like using the word niggardly. Nothing to do with the percieved offense.
What if all the Christians in the country went just one year where they didn't buy any presents, but went the hand-made route or just got together? It would be sort of a year of jubilee from the materialism and I can guarantee that the next year every retailer in the nation would be saying 'Merry Christmas'. It's a big what if and I know it won't happen. But it's always fun to dream.
I thought Target booted the Salvation Army, am I wrong? Hope so.
Actually I think we ought to boycott anyone who says any greeting to us as we enter a store.
I like it when they are silent, smile and are ready to either help me or ring my purchases.
To insist on "merry Christmas" seems kind of in your face. What if the person workiing is jew? Can they say Happy Hannaka to you? To insist on your personal greeting from a person who works in a store, regardless of his beliefs, seems sort of Talibanesque to me.
LOL!
Yea, if they ran an add "If your queer your dear and are offered 20% off all merchandise", the homosexual community around Christmas time would quadruple in size.
A hardware/software guru friend of mine has been a VERY good customer of theirs for years.
He fired off an email the other day to Best Buy, getting the point across about how much he's going to be buying from them for *Christmas* presents this year but oops!, wait a minute, they don't acknowledge Christmas anymore... Guess he'll buy his gifts from a place that will.
here we go again......
...any store that doesn't advertise MERRY CHRISTMAS.....where did I say I wanted a greeter to say that???????
uuuuuurrrrrgggggggg
Since it's in season, although I am Christian, if it were a sincere salutation it wouldn't bother me at all.
Shop at the smaller specialty stores. It would give them a much needed boost against the giants who sell you nothing but crap anyway.
In a way we did that this year. Yes some purchases were made (we have an 8 yo, what can I say) but we made those purchases in October. IOW, I won't be involved in all the rush and one upmanship that has become December.
Best Buy considers the use of Merry Christmas to be disrespectful.
afa.net has a nice compilation of corporations which support Christmas and those which declare Christmas to be disrespectful.
They did. The bell ringers anyway.
