And oddly enough, he was not a Lutheran from Norway. "Dinssa" is a common surname among Muslims in Nigeria. From Associated Press, with thanks to Joe Washburn:

DETROIT -- A man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after officials say they found him carrying $78,883 in cash and a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials and cyanide. He will be held in custody at least until Monday, a U.S. magistrate ruled Wednesday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leonid Feller said Sisayehiticha Dinssa is a potential risk to the community and federal agents want to get a warrant to search his computer more thoroughly, The Detroit News reported.

U.S. Magistrate Donald Scheer approved Feller's request to detain Dinssa. He is charged with concealing more than $10,000 in his luggage, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, plus forfeiture of the money, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Feller said Dinssa, who gave a Texas address, arrived in Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam and was headed for Phoenix.

Dinssa, an unemployed U.S. citizen, was arrested at the airport Tuesday. An affidavit filed in court said a dog found the scent of narcotics on cash Dinssa carried.

When agents asked him if he had any cash to declare, he said he had $18,000, authorities said. But when agents checked his luggage, they found an additional $59,000. When they scrolled through his laptop, they said they found the mysterious files.

It also true that anytime you make a cash deposit at a bank that is greater than or equal to $10,000 the teller has to report it the feds (IRS). ""

Also same rules for withdrawal above $10K.

Yes, but did his laptop contain "mysterious files"? Inquiring minds want to know.

Dinshihead, an unemployed American citizen, is flying in from Amsterdam and says he has $18,000 cash. They check his bags and find a huge amount of additional undeclared cash and he is held pending an investigation. You think his rights have been violated ?

Not me

Based on some of the responses you can see how terrorists are able to exploit and abuse our civilization to murder us. Some people render themselves unable to identify friend from foe and are not only useless they are actually dangerous. Witness the Democrats and those who voted for them. Given their way we would go back to the Clinton methods for fighting IslamoFacism, namely keep being victims.

The ability of customs to search people at the border has never been considered an unreasonable search.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Few exceptions to the presumptive warrant and probable cause requirements are more firmly rooted than the “border search” exception. Pursuant to the right of the United States to protect itself by stopping and examining persons and property crossing into the country, routine border searches are reasonable simply by virtue of the fact that they occur at the border.
It is your right to believe so. And I am sure an ACLU attorney will defend this victim's ability to smuggle in "$78,883 in cash and a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials, and cyanide" by claiming his rights were violated. This is just what the Jihadists love so much about our country.
based on some of the responses you can see how the rights of American citizen(s) are being taken away with the approval of many.
This mans money was STOLEN from him, but as long as it stops "terrorism" I guess the majority here thinks it's OK.
they start with the "unemployed", "jews", "vagrants", etc. then work their way up, read some history people. one day it will be your money, because you had some suspicious "files" on your laptop.
So, you mean that it should be perfectly legal for people to carry tens of thousands of dollars in cash without having to declare it, nevermind the narcotic-sniffing dog (the one that tagged his luggage)? Organized crime loves voters like you. Flying is not a right. It is a federally regulated private enterprise offering transportation to the public. When people cross the borders of our nation, I should hope that they are subject to scrutiny by the government as this is part of their Constitutional responsibility.
That is only because the majority of us are patriotic American citizens and not leftist traitors, illegal or otherwise.
I must have missed the section of the article indicating the victim was a "leftist traitor". Sorry.
Yeah, I know the Left has a habit of calling people like Jose Padilla victims ...
Oh, I understand now, you where attempting to call me a "leftist traitor" because I would like to see our goverment restrained by the traditional limitations which where defined by our founding fathers in the Constitution of the United States of America.
Here I was thinking that "Free Republic" was a place to find like minded people. I must have been mistaken and this forum must have been named incorrectly. If "most" people here are as you describe, we should rename the site to "Constrained Democracy" or something along those lines.
A great man long ago seems to have described you pretty well.
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
They key words being "essential liberty" and our essential liberty does not include rights for terrorists (or their supporters), other than the right to a fair trial and fast hanging (of our choice).
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
