Man with laptop, cash arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport

And oddly enough, he was not a Lutheran from Norway. "Dinssa" is a common surname among Muslims in Nigeria. From Associated Press, with thanks to Joe Washburn:

DETROIT -- A man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after officials say they found him carrying $78,883 in cash and a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials and cyanide. He will be held in custody at least until Monday, a U.S. magistrate ruled Wednesday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leonid Feller said Sisayehiticha Dinssa is a potential risk to the community and federal agents want to get a warrant to search his computer more thoroughly, The Detroit News reported.

U.S. Magistrate Donald Scheer approved Feller's request to detain Dinssa. He is charged with concealing more than $10,000 in his luggage, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, plus forfeiture of the money, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Feller said Dinssa, who gave a Texas address, arrived in Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam and was headed for Phoenix.

Dinssa, an unemployed U.S. citizen, was arrested at the airport Tuesday. An affidavit filed in court said a dog found the scent of narcotics on cash Dinssa carried.

When agents asked him if he had any cash to declare, he said he had $18,000, authorities said. But when agents checked his luggage, they found an additional $59,000. When they scrolled through his laptop, they said they found the mysterious files.

Amendment IV The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Dinshihead, an unemployed American citizen, is flying in from Amsterdam and says he has $18,000 cash. They check his bags and find a huge amount of additional undeclared cash and he is held pending an investigation. You think his rights have been violated?

.....he was not a Lutheran from Norway...

Can the racist comments. They distract from real security issues facing this great nation of ours.

These Norwegians blend easily into the background. And although their technology has not yet created the lutefisk bomb, tightly wrapping lutefisk around conventional explosives could cause an explosion unimaginable in horror, affecting non-Norwegians for miles around, especially women, children, and members of federally protected minority species.

This is exactly why the Somali TSA agents at Columbus, OH, regularly strip-search Norwegian grandmas from Duluth. You just can't be too careful.

Jihad=Norwegian for, "Hey Ragnar, lets go a-viking tonight!"

Oh no, the man next to me on the last flight I flew had a laptop and a wallet. The wallet might have contained cash.

When you come into the USA, there is a customs declaration form that must be filled out.

The form clearly says that certain amounts of cash- $10,000 or more- must be declared. It's the law donchano. If you don't declare the cash you commit a crime, and they make sure you are informed of that before you get the choice of red line- blue line.

So he chooses to break the law and tried to smuggle in the undeclared cash- dogs sniffed him out (probable cause) and the customs guys investigated. Based on similar cases, he probably was offered the chance to voluntarily open the suitcase, speeding up the warrant process by about two hours or even less.

The stuff on his laptop was thrown in to add spice. If it's not classified a citizen can have any information desired. The only cases where that does not apply is where the information holder gives certain stuff (bombs and meth recipes and a few other things) to someone who is likely to commit a crime (then you become an accessory).

And did the drug sniffing dogs finger him too, like they did this guy? Seriously, I hear you about government intrusion. But you have to be able stop guys like this. I know that the ACLU would not agree. What is your answer?

This sounds crazy though. It's illegal to carry money?

Trying to take it across the border without declaring it is indeed illegal and has been for quite some time.

An awful lot of these terror types give Texas addresses, but I guess they're everywhere. And they are definitely planning nuclear attacks on our country, while the Dems are busy arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. They're just happy they're driving it now.

Note to self: Delete any information regarding nuclear materials and cyanide from laptop before traveling...

Don't forget that folder labeled "Biological Weapons" either.

That does it, no more sleep for me. The horror of a potential lutefisk bomb is worse than any 1950s sci-fi movie. Even Ed Wood wouldn't have made a movie about lutefisk.

If you tell them you have more than $10,000 they seize it, unless you have a very, very good reason for carrying a lot of money, and even then, if it's a day of the week ending in 'day' they may hold it for an IRS determination. If you don't tell them, they seize and keep it for sure and send you to prison for lying. Win, win for Big Brother. Guess we just have to carry American Express after all...

You have to declare any cash in excess of 10 grand when you come into this country. It is a law designed to halt drug and mob and other illegal cash comig in.

It is a law enforcement tool. Anyone who travels out of the country knows it.
