Stolen Valor Act stalls in House (Shame on House Republicans)
vet email | 11/16/06

(This is just plain wrong -- Louis)

The House Judiciary Committee failed to take action on the Stolen Valor Act during its first meeting after the midterm elections and is not scheduled to send the bill to the floor before the current congressional session concludes at the end of the year, according to committee spokesman Terry Shawn.

The Stolen Valor Act — which has been bottled up in the House subcommittee on crime, terrorism and homeland security since the Senate unanimously passed its version of the bill Sept. 7 — would close a loophole in current law that allows fraudulent veterans to claim they rate military decorations they didn’t earn as long as they don’t physically wear them.

Currently, people who didn’t earn such awards as the Silver Star, Navy Cross and Medal of Honor can put them on their résumés and vehicle license plates without violating the law. The new legislation prescribes hefty fines and up to a year in jail for posers who try to pass themselves off as war heroes.

The bill has attracted more than 100 co-sponsors in the House — including five Judiciary Committee members — since it was introduced in the summer of 2005 by Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., who pushed unsuccessfully to get the bill passed before Congress adjourned for the midterm elections Oct. 1.

Co-sponsor Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., called the committee’s failure to act on the bill before adjournment “enormously frustrating.” Committee member Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said he was “disappointed” by the lack of traction the bill has gained in committee.

The committee is scheduled to meet again during the first two weeks of December. If the bill does not make it to the floor for a vote then, it must be reintroduced in the House and Senate during the next congressional session.

Hey,I was a SP5 who got a Good Conduct Medal (and nothing more) but I have trouble with this. When you claim to have won the Medal of Honor in an attempt to get a job or to gain in some other financial way then they should throw the book at you.

But if you're just bragging to your buddies at the bar,or even at your American Legion post I have trouble with such bragging getting you a year in the slammer.

Go ahead....flame away. But I see this as being the conservative answer to "hate crimes".

I kinda figured that it was a joke. That's why I answered in a rather lighthearted way.I guess I should have included a smiley face.

When I was in the Army, I got three Army Achievement Medals (and the assorted Good Conduct, Overseas Service, and something else), but when doing the paper work upon leaving, my final orders said that I'd only gotten two. I was getting out on a Friday afternoon. The "fix" suggested was to come back on Monday and get the paperwork corrected.

Nope. My official orders still say I have only two. ;-)

One would think that you could straighten out your problem...perhaps even by e-mail.It would probably be a pain in the hindquaters,but....

As for me,my military "career" was decidedly ordinary. No heroism or cowardice. No Article 15's...nothin'.I followed orders (well, most of them at least) and kept my mouth shut. That, combined with the fact that I was never ordered overseas meant that my Class A's were very uncluttered by medals, overseas stripes,Purple Hearts or anything else.

Hmmm... Sure, claiming medals that were not actually awarded is a pretty lowlife thing to do, but I'm not sure it needs to be against the law.

If you asy you are a cop, and you are not, anywhere, anytime, it is illegal.

Folks who claim medals they did not win should face mandatory jail time. One year, minimum.

Especially because they are mostly liberals.
