New PlayStation 3 not playing some older games

TOKYO — Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which went on sale in Japan over the weekend leading off a global launch, can't play some of the older games for the original PlayStation and the upgrade PlayStation 2, a company official said today.

Sony Corp. had billed PlayStation 3 as compatible with the previous PlayStation machines.

But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all.

He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but he said the same problem is expected when the game console goes on sale in the U.S. Nov. 17. About 16,000 different games have been sold for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in North America.

Fukuoka said the problems in playing the older games were not a glitch and had been expected. Sony announced the problem on its Japanese Web page Nov. 11, the day when the PS3 went on sale to lines of eager fans at Japanese retailers.

Users can punch in the name of the PS or PS2 game on the Web page, and a list will pop up, telling you if the game can be played without problems or not.

For example, all the Biohazard series games can be played without problem, except for one in which a virtual gun won't fire properly, according to Sony's Web page.

"We are sorry for the game fans that they cannot play all the games," Fukuoka said. "But unfortunately some of these problems could not be avoided."

PlayStation 3 is facing off in a three-way console war for this Christmas against Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which goes on sale Nov. 19 in the U.S., and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which had a year's head start over rivals.

Although response has been enthusiastic to the PS3, the launch hasn't been smooth.

Production problems meant that only 100,000 PlayStation 3 machines were in time for its debut in Japan. When it goes on sale in the United States on Nov. 17, some 400,000 PS3 consoles will be available there.

The console's European launch has been pushed back until March. That was the second delay, as PS3 had been initially promised for spring of this year.

Sony has a lot riding on the success of the PS3, which is powered by the new "Cell" computer chip and supported by the next-generation Blu-ray video disc format.

But Sony will be losing money for a some time because of the high costs for research and production that went into the highly sophisticated machine.

The red ink is coming at a time when the Japanese electronics and entertainment company, known for the Walkman portable audio player and "Spider-Man" movies, is struggling to stage a comeback.

In recent years, Sony has fallen behind in key products like flat-panel TVs and digital music players. A fumble in its PS3 business could prove a huge blow at a time when it's seeing its brand image badly tarnished by a massive global recall of lithium-ion batteries for laptops.

I just go to a place like emuasylum.com and play the old games on emulators for free. Not PS games, but games enough for this old foggie.

So!! I don't put old tires on my new car either.

But seriously, do you really think this was an accident? Do you think they want to sell NEW games for this platform? Just a thought.

I've played the PS3 and I wasn't impressed. At least not $500-$600 impressed. Try a friend's before you buy it. Also, the unit is big and throws off a lot of heat. I would wait for a price drop and a redesign. Then again, at $60 a pop, I don't play brand new games anyway.

Hmm... Sound like same problems as XBox 360! Half the old XBox gamex do not work on XBox 360. Fundamental changes from sound and video hardware are the reason. Developers that created games soley for XBox and not PS2 often were ices out of XBox 360 as they had no hardware versatility. Mech Assault is a prime example. That why I bought a switch box and still have my old XBox console

Part of the problem is that I am certain that compatibility with older games comes under emulation which tends to be buggy - particularly with the more sophisticated games.

Sony bought (under threat of a lawsuit) a bit of emulation software several years back called Virtual Gamestation. Was actually starting to show some real progress, but some games were proving to be major obstacles. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the same games are the culprit this time around as well.

Seems like a new PS3 unit + a couple of games can get close to $1k. Pretty steep (even though you get a blue ray player, right?)

There's lots of talk about the Nintendo Wii - it comes in at $250 for the unit with some pretty good games available.

The PS3 is built for the future... if it has a fault, its that it is too "bleeding edge". Both the CELL (the next revolution in CPU processors) and Blu-Ray (the next "DVD" media) its going to hurt with the $599 price tag.

That said... it will be sitting pretty 3 years in and will have extended its life cycle quite a bit.

Its a gamble that extra life and advantage then, in trade for the short-term advantage at launch.

My perdition... a below-average (and disappointing) launch, followed by growing steam and eventual 'break even' point about 2.5 years in, and PS3 winning the day by 2009.

Gee, and to think that I was stressing out earlier today about the whole situation with Iran's nuclear program. This certainly helps put that in perspective...

Yes, the most important issue in today's messed-up world is whether or not I can get my 8-year-old "Dave Mirra BMX" game to play correctly on PS3.

And of course, GTA: Vice City comes in a close second.

That controller is either going to be great or be the biggest failure since New Coke.

I want to try it out, actually swinging at pitches instead of pushing buttons might be cool.

My guess is that the Nintendo Wii will not face the same problem. I concur that the PS3 may be the console in about 2 years, but I can wait. In the meantime I'll see how the new Wii plays and then in about two years of price drops I may consider the PS3. I'm smart enough to have learned that it profits one little to chase bleeding edge technology just for the "thrill" of it.
