What a bizarre pick. They couldn't find anyone else? Pat Toomey would've been a good choice, assuming Santorum, Steele and Hayworth didn't want it. Martinez came out of nowhere...

Yes, it has just been made painfully clear that the "GOP line" includes amnesty and contempt for the rule of law.

That should make any person who cherishes the Republic more then a little angry.

Hoo boy. Okay, they're obviously still trying to get the Hispanic/moderate vote. No problem there, as long as they don't ignore the conservative base.

I really, really really hope they've learned THAT from the '06 experience.

"I thought Steele was going to be asked?"

So did Steele.
Just goes to show you what solid, outspoken, support gets you: selection for a trivial pursuit question.

OOOOOH!!!
Okay, now we've got:

Asa Hutchinson
Mike Steele
Mel Martinez
Newt Gingrich
J.C. Watts

Anyone else?
(who said the conservatives were not inclusive?)

"Did any of you actually read the bill on immigration because it is NOT amnesty?"

Uh oh...I hear the the sound of an army of head spinners coming in your direction. I fear you may be in for a long night. LOL.

Did you make it to the old immigration threads? This was the hottest debate since the Supreme Court picks.

The GOP was completely split on it.

Ambassador is a heck of a lot better than HUD! It would give Steele some critical foriegn policy experience too which could keep his name alive.

I know about the figurehead, but I still think it is better to have someone hands on that is in charge.

LOL! I just thought I would throw that out there to see what happens! :) Want to see how far these folks would go on this because most are not Republicans IMHO!

>> he is not a "token" appointee because he has won an election with 5 million people voting for him in a very big state. It's a great move. <<

Let's compare how "successful" the current GOP Senator from FL's campaign was compared to the last GOP Senator to representate that state.

U.S. SENATE - FL
Mack (R) 2,894,726 70.5%
Rodham (D) 1,210,412 29.5%

U.S. SENATE - FL
Martinez (R) 3,672,864 49%
Castor (D) 3,590,201 48%
Bradley (O) 166,642 2%

Connie Mack was Senator as recently as 2000. He got a landslide 70% of the vote WITHOUT an hispanic surname -- running against the brother of Hillary! Mel Martinez got a pathteic 49% of the vote (the majority of Floridians didn't even vote FOR him) against a political unknown and won by 1%. If not for a third party guy sucking votes from the Dem and so many Cubans voting for a fellow "latino", this guy would have been toast.

Florida is a very heavily Republican state where the Republicans have solid control over both houses of the legislature, most of the statewide offices, and put their electoral votes in the GOP column unless the Dems nominate a folksy southerner, etc., etc. It's fairly easy for any decent "R" to rack up 48%+ of the vote in a statewide election there unless their name is Katherine Harris. Mel Martinez's 1% margin of victory was lousy. If this guy had to run for Senator in a "swing state" like Iowa, he would have been crushed. Note that Michael Steele nearly matched Martinez's percentage running in the bluest of the blue states.

Although Martinez's VOTING record has been solid, he's had completely medoicre "leadership" skills in the Senate (see Trent Lott and Liddy Dole for further examples) This is the dope who actually HANDED the ENEMY a memo with the "Terry Schivo talking points" on it so the Dems could politize the issue and have it explode in the GOP's face. The ONLY reason Martinez is the exclusive club of 100 is because his last name is "Martinez" instead of "Martin". There were far more qualified and accomplished Floridian Republicans passed up in favor of Amnesty Mel. He is the pick of the "Affirmation action" wing the GOP who wants to appoint people on the basis of skin color.

I respect Newt's personal ambitions but I don't see him winning the primaries. That would put him right back where he is right now. We need him as a leader somewhere and since he's no longer in Congress, RNC Chairman sounds ideal.

He's a great fundraiser and knows how to get Repubs to stand together and sign onto winning strategies.

Daniel Webster and Johnnie Byrd for starters. Webster considered running but was told by the "powers that be" to get out of the way for Amnesty Mel. Byrd, the sitting speaker of the Florida House, did manage to get in at the last minute but was completely ellipsed by all the money that Amnesty Mel and Bill Collum had already spent getting their names.

Steele was probably unwilling be a neocon lackey. Martinez will be anybody's anything if he can grab more power. Oh, well, it looks like I've cast my last Republicrat vote.

What qualifies him for the job though?

Is he a great fundraiser or organizer? I would think neither since I've never heard about him doing that kind of work. In fact I've never heard about him at all till now.

Well guess what - as long as Reps continue to govern and generally like dems, and create/go along with huge deficit spending, wide open borders, massive illegals etc - they are going to continue to lose in one election after another - i.e. as demonstrated last week

Again: punish the bad Republicans in the primaries, but hold your nose in the general election if needed.

Have we learned nothing from Ross Perot?

An honest question.

What fundraising/organizational skills does the man possess? Is that not the main function of RNC Chairman?

I don't think the guy is qualified to do the enormous job of protecting the WH from Dems and rebuilding a majority Congress.

Point is there has got to be somebody better than this guy.
