I think the biggest issue is his pro-amnesty stance.

Good Lord. The RNC has either learned nothing from November 7th, or actually wants to run small-government conservatives out of the party.

"Mel Martinez now becomes the first minority to head a major political party, and he is not a "token" appointee because he has won an election with 5 million people voting for him in a very big state. It's a great move."
It's a great move if you want open borders. Your bigoted assumption that the GOP is a party of "angry white southern married Christians" is garbage. What we have right now is an elitist Repub. establisment forcing integration with Latin America despite voter opposition. Most people in this country (including many Hispanics) want our immigration laws enforced and no amnesty.
Imho, the GOP's relentless pandering to Hispanics, and the dominance of open border elitists, will kill the Republican party.

Your on target.. someone said we need a street fighter.. someone who knows the American interest, willing to challenge the Dems.. excited enough to stump in every circle for a new, emerging, visionary and responsive Republican party.. full of hope, opportunity and integrity.. that is just not good old, sleepy eyed, lazy, bumbling Mel... I am so heartbroken with our leadership... and just voted a full Republican ticket... I need to sit with Jeb a bit to discover what idiot came up with this guy... by the way, just because organizations promote someone on a certain standard does not endorse or evaluate the capacity for specific roles... don't be fooled by applause sheets!

You all need to get it into your heads that the Republican Party has GOT to appeal to Hispanic voters or it is DONE as a majority party within the next 10 years. President Bush and Karl Rove are not going to give up on this. The GOP will not survive as a party of angry white Southern married Christians. Mel Martinez now becomes the first minority to head a major political party, and he is not a "token" appointee because he has won an election with 5 million people voting for him in a very big state. It's a great move.I agree completely, but we do need to pep this guy up and train him to be a sharper speaker, quicker on his feet.

I resent being called an "angry white southern Christian". Me too! I think its a very racist thing to say.

GWB is hellbent on amnesty. He knew the plan would infuriate conservatives in a mid-term election year, but he went full-speed ahead. The guy is killing the Republican party. I really wouldn't mind if Pelosi went ahead with impeachment. At least Cheney could deliver speeches without sounding like a 7th grader.

First we step in it, then we fall in it. I regret going door to door for him last cycle. We are doomed!!!!

You loved Steele. How is that. Everyone else hated the idea of Steele. No opinions of your own allowed. Yep, I still love Steele! Some posters here found fault with him, because he didn't share 100% of their views. For that matter, he doesn't share 100% of my views either, but I am happy with 90%.

Over at the DNC they're saying, "Aw crap, they made Martinez head of the RNC. We're doomed." NOT!

We laughed about Howard Dean...and he is always good for an outrageous statement...but, he gets attention.
We need someone who gets attention...and I don't think I have ever listened to a whole floor speech that Martinez has given..but, there are LOTS of Senators that I don't listen to.
I am almost as disappointed with Lamar Alexander as Minority Whip...because HE doesn't inspire excitement...and IMHO..the word "whip" connotes "gung-ho..let's get going" type personality.
I guess I am still on edge from last Tuesday.

If he has a 100% ACU rating in 2005 with a lifetime rating of 96%, I am curious as to why so many are upset? I'm going to puke.
Martinez ?

I am curious as to why so many are upset? Google the words "Hagel-Martinez bill" and "immigration."
