McCain to launch 2008 exploratory panel
Yahoo News (AP) ^ | November 10, 2006 | LIZ SIDOTI,

Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, GOP officials said Friday.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.

McCain, the GOP maverick who unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination in 2000, already has opened a bank account for the committee, one official said.

"The senator has made no decision about running for president," said Eileen McMenamin, a McCain spokeswoman.

Aides to McCain say the senator will discuss a presidential bid with his family over the Christmas holiday.

McCain is a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and served in the House for four years before that.

If McCain were to run, he would turn 72 on Aug. 29, 2008, at the height of the campaign. Only President Reagan was older — 73 at the start of his second term. McCain's health could be another issue. The senator has had several cancerous lesions removed from his skin.

Conservatives need to work diligently to make sure McCain either abandons his plans or fails in the Republican primaries.

I can think of very few politicians who could actually suppress the rabid anti-Hillary vote by conservatives, but John McCain is one such politician on that very short list. McCain is absolute poison to the conservative movement.

I vote McCain as house towel handler.

Or custodian, whichever.

McCain is Howard Dean with Manchurian Candidate training.

He will NOT get my vote.

A vote for him, or Rudy, simply encourage the GOP to move even farther to the left. (I like Rudy, he's a nice guy, but he'll vote like Hillary. No thanks.)

I held my nose, once again, and voted for all the RINOs offered me. It didn't work.

Never again.

I know a lot of folks in these parts don't like him BUT...

If he is the nominee I will support him because the alternative would be worse.

The message of 2006 was clear-people don't want a big-government spending, nanny-stating Christian Socialist Bush clone in '08. McCain, whatever you might think of him, certainly fits that bill. Let's face facts-the GOP desperately needs to get back to common-sense fiscal conservatism and McCain is one of the few who has been willing to speak out against the porkers who were in charge before.

I agree. But the problem is McCain against any dimocRAT. I would have to vote for McCain versus any dimocRAT. However with any luck he won't make it out of the primaries so I won't have to cross that bridge.

"Explore this, Senator..."

I'd rather have him explore the Amazon jungle.

Call him what you want, but with his lifetime ACU rating (80%), he's not a RINO.

The media will continue its fawning treatment of McCain until he wins the primary. Then he will be an easy target to bring down.

And if he loses in the primary, the irrational conservatives will be blamed. We've seen this script before.

He might win the nomination due to support of the occasional Republicans who are persuaded by the media that he is "the guy," but he will not win the Presidency.

Sad, but true.

The guy is nuts. It's that simple. As a Vet myself, I completely respect his military service, but he's just not right in the head. And he's said some pretty stupid things through the years.

"Thank God for our form of government. The media won't let there be any cover-up." ~ John McCain

And don't even get me started on McCain-Feingold. Feingold is my Senator. *SPIT*

Guess he didn't get the news about RINOs in the last election.

Here's a good article on some mistakes the Republicans made that brought us up to Tuesday's election. John McCain has a starring role. I pray he is not our nominee, but if he is, I will be forced to vote for him because Hillary is 10 times worse.

Have you noticed Lindsey Graham reaching for McCain's coat tails? We've sure noticed it here in S. Carolina. Whatever McCain is doing, look over his shoulder and you'll find Graham. There's another one that needs to "go" in the next primary.
