WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.
A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over.

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.
Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.
"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.
"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."
The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

Bolton's appointment will expire in January unless the Senate confirms him, and the probable next chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee says approval is unlikely.
"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, who is set to become the committee's chairman and control the agenda in January.

Frist was an improvement over lott. Lott was abysmial and Lott is trying to make a leadership come bake as minority leader.
The senate is literally institutionally snobby and too much infested with "us vs them outside the senate".
The fact is ALL senators need to be taken down a peg or two on a routine basis to try and remind them about being human.
Term limits would fly before that pipe dream.
From what I have seen so far, Bush and fellow RINOs have now opened the White House concession stand.
That's a good idea. They'll be the party of "no" for the next two years, and the activity will keep them and their media legions out of our hair for the next 2 years.

From what I have seen, with 20% pathetic turnout, there is no mandate to do anything conservative. Bush doesn't owe the conservatives squat. They stayed home Tuesday. Now we all pay the price.

This quote shows why this human debris is not fit to be a US Senator: he is concerned with placating people rather than doing what is right.

For Senators to block a president's UN ambassador pick, especially during war, is an abomination. Maybe worse than blocking judges. Another outrage we have suffered quietly.

I don't think that the recess appointment will hold with the new congress coming into place in January.
Rush was saying something about this the other day, but I missed what the possible solution was.
The bottom line is that we honest conservatives need to roll up our sleeves and make certain that the RAT majority is a temporary one and that we also weed out the "weak sisters" in our ranks.
This next two years is going to be a bumpy ride with a ton of work to do.

That is something that conservatives have understood long before this election.
I am not a RINO supporter, and I like John Bolton in that position, but with the current climate in Washington does anybody think that there are 60 votes for cloture with or without Lincoln Chaffee? If all Republicans stood together, unlikely, which 6 Dems would back him?
"What do you think that that little weasel will be doing in the real world? Has he ever earned a dime in the private sector?"
Outside of a couple of self loathing Liberals, Democrats rarely work in the real world.
The president should tell the people that he needs his man at the UN at dangerous times, the dems say they want to work together, and if they block his personnel the results will be squarely on THEIR heads. Should.
