I was just watching Fox News. Carl Cameron mentioned that Ken Mehlman will most likely step down as RNC Chair this January. Among potential replacements, he mentioned Bill Owen (Governor of Colorado) and Michael Steele (Lt. Governor and 2006 Senate nominee from Maryland).
At first glance, I really like the idea of Steele leading the party. He has both elected and party experience. Your thoughts?
I had never heard him speak until yesterday and he was very articulate. I was impressed.

I prefer to have a conservative who will pander to the middle when pandering needs to be done.
In honor of the new new tone, it should be Tom Daschle.

Mr. Steele is pretty conservative. On a few issues, he isn't. These include the death penalty (he's against it) and the minimum wage (he'd like to raise it).
But he's pro-life, anti-abortion, anti-embryonic stem cell, anti-assisted suicide, anti-euthanasia, pro-tax cuts, anti-pork, pro-school vouchers, pro-defense, pro-vigorous foreign policy, anti-cut and run from Iraq.
He certainly had to be careful how he said stuff in his Senatorial campaign (for instance, talking about under what conditions the US could eventually pull out of Iraq [victory], rather than talking about "staying the course"), but he's a pretty conservative fellow.
He's also good at the mechanics of party-building, he's an excellent speaker, a very bright guy, and a great face for the party.
Nobody's perfect, but Mr. Steele ain't too far off. ;-)

The MSM's influence was certainly felt this time around.

I LIKE IT! I think that's the best post-election idea I've heard so far, and not the least because it will hugely piss off the Dems to have a black man running the RNC.
That would piss the democrats off and scare them too.

I assure you that there are positions that he takes that will vex some conservatives.
He's for "affirmative action." Some folks just see red when they see those two words together, and there is nothing to be done about. But his support is for what affirmative action was meant to be - outreach to folks who have traditionally been excluded, not quotas and hard set-asides.
He's not libertarian by any stretch - you're not going to see him champion the idea of getting rid of anything that doesn't fall under the general rubric of "enumerated powers."
But he's pretty conservative, as conservative as Rick Santorum or Mitch McConnell.

The entire leadership from the top down, needs to resign in shame. There was no leadership, no direction, no agenda, no purpose, and no response from the GOP during the entire election cycle, as well as the last two years. They failed to respond to any political attack. They failed to set an agenda, they allowed the Democrats to set the agenda, the tone and control the debate for the last two years. The GOP may have held the seats in Congress, but the Democrats ran it.
You've got that right. He really understands politics. The only problem with him is that the press has made him look like a zealot.
No way!!!! I could not stand the sound of his voice on TV all the time. (Literally, his actual voice drives me nuts.)
I'm not sure what this means, is it a compliment or a slam to Steele?
Then he ain't a conservative and certainly not a leader. Principal is that which will not be compromised. The GOP are 'conservatives' pandering to the middle - pandering, selling their values for votes. And selling out.
Either we are equal or we are not. Good people should be armed where they will, with wits and guns. NRA KMA
We really need someone who will get on TV when needed. Have you ever noticed that the democrats always have someone telling their position on TV, yet there is often nobody doing the same for the republicans? We need someone who will demand to respond to anything the democrats say and actually do a good job at it.
