I was just watching Fox News. Carl Cameron mentioned that Ken Mehlman will most likely step down as RNC Chair this January. Among potential replacements, he mentioned Bill Owen (Governor of Colorado) and Michael Steele (Lt. Governor and 2006 Senate nominee from Maryland).
At first glance, I really like the idea of Steele leading the party. He has both elected and party experience. Your thoughts?
I think the chgs against him are thrumped up and wrong, but, I hardly think Tom is as pure as the driven snow, either.
Not even a consideration for RNC chairman, JMHO.
Who gives a crap what the press thinks. Besides, this is not a publicly elected office. He will be insulated from the press as chairman and actually be able to put this broken party back together. Since Newt can never get elected as POTUS (because of all his percieved personal failings) this is a PERFECT fit for him and us.
Those 'moderates in the middle' are what wins elections...look what happened Tuesday.
Steele would be excellent. The primary qualification needed is someone who is telegenic, quick on their feet, and can sell ice to the Eskimos.
Steele is an excellent choice, no doubt. He would be my second choice, right behind Newt. TV personality is to be considered, BUT the main qualification should be someone who understands how to devise a strategy to WIN! That would be Newt.
No sale here. Newt is despised by the MSM. He'd never get a fair shake on any TV show.
NO MORE WEENIES....

NO MORE WEENIES....
Can I get an AMEN?
Steele works for me!
Totally agree!
I think the PROBLEM is seasoned professional politicians.
I'd happily join the Steele chorus.
He ran the best ever political ads, and one terrific campaign. Most political ads are the same, just change the candidate's name, party and issues. Steele's ads were sharp, focused, sophisticated... and funny. He managed to line up some serious endorsements from elected Democrats.
Unfortunately his campaign was in the People's Republic of Maryland .. a hopeless cause, esp this year. Maryland, like most other states, is dominated by metropolitan areas populated by libs. Outside Baltimore and the DC suburbs, it's a pretty decent state.
Yes for Steele.....
Inexperience can be overcome with a good supporting cast. No amount of experience, however, can overcome incompetence (case in point: Jimmy Carter).
Michael Steele would be an awesome choice. Owens is as exciting as oatmeal.
I didn't mention politicians.
Dear Vigilanteman,
I'm not sure why some posters are calling Mr. Steele inexperienced. He has been a county party chairman and a state party chairman, and did a good job at both. He's been a lieutenant governor, and by every account, ran a great campaign for the United States Senate in a heavily Democrat year in a heavily Democrat state.
Seems to me like he's got a good mix of experiences, both in terms of party management, administration and building, as well as elected office and actual candidacy for office.
There are folks with more experience, but it's wrong to call Mr. Steele inexperienced.

Well, there'a another sort of professional which has often been linked to politicians, both in nature and in relationships. I don't suppose you mean them.
What do you mean - professional Republican organization suits?
I like Steele. It's the Party that needs a kick in the backside (out of the Beltway country club).
"Seasoned professionals" got us into this mess -- Rove most of all, by catering to Bush's belief and inclination to ignore public sentiment. Bill Owens is tainted by scandals associated with a messy divorce and repudiation of a no taxes pledge. We need new leadership at the RNC, and I know of no defects with Steele.
