But what the hey, smear them for volunteering to do dangerous combat, like a typical democrat.

Who the hell is smearing them? I'm saying Tillman's death was an accident...the coverup about it wasn't. The soldier on the line is innocent, the big brass and civilians running the Dept. of the Army and commanding him isn't. Get the point?

Fog of war...*it* happens! Like Nixon discovered, the deed wasn't the crime, the coverup was!

Exactly. If the Army had just come forth with what they knew at the beginning, this story would have faded away a long time ago, and would be just a sad footnote in the biography of this brave and selfless man.

But it certainly looks like somebody tried to cover it up, maybe afraid to lose him as a symbol. Instead, they made him a symbol of a very different type, and guaranteed that this story would stay on the front pages for a long time to come.

It's always better to admit the bad things early, when they can be contained. The American people have an amazing heart and generosity of spirit, and will forgive almost anything. Anything, that is, except a coverup.

The AP should be considered a terrorist sympathizer outfit .
Yes they are and I do not take their version as fact.

"I, for one, would like to get to the bottom of this, if only so that the military may learn from it, and to provide closure to the fambly."

Yea, perhaps they can tell the family that their son thought his name was so good, it could stop bullets, which is why he jumped up while under fire and yelled "don't shoot, I'm Pat Tillman", at shooters with very loud guns which would drown out any voice, (even Pat Tillmans) instead of taking cover like he was trained to do.

Is this a fictional novel or a news story? How could they possibly know he said this?

They don't know and never will.

It's just AP's usual cheap shots which does two things, takes Pat Tillamn's patriotism away and makes him look like a dumb misguided redneck, plus the usual swipes at the US military.

Yes, this helps his family understand what happened alright...

Before next year ends, every warrior who served in Iraq or Afghanistan with a rifle or any lethal weapon could find themselves in similiar trial or phoney war crime trials hosted by the ACLU in congress.

When this bs is over, no one will ever want to serve this country again. That is the goal of the ACLU, the libs and their Islamofascist donors and backers.

Just remember when these brave warriors are in the upcoming kangaroo trials, we can thank those who wanted to teach Republicans and Americans a lesson by putting the Pelosi/Clintoon, Kennedy, Kerry, Murtha, Durbin thugs in power to control this country.

I get three things out of this article-

The writer, and quite a few REMFs, have no clue about combat conditions or the behavior of men in battle.

Any attempted cover up that occurred should be ruthlessly punished, and there would have probably been no cover up had one of the dead not been an former NFL player.

The wisdom of accepting celebrities in the combat arms should be questioned. In WWII, the press would have spun a celebrity casualty as "we're all in this together", today it triggers an automatic spasm of recrimination that hurts the overall military effort.

What the fk is your point posting this sht on FR?

Did FR become some extension of Pravda when I wasn't looking? We are not at war with Eurasia. It is actually okay to criticize and look into the way the government (including the civilian-run military) does things. Relax.

No kidding! Sheesh!

I am pro-police. But if a family member of mine was accidentally killed in a shootout, and I was given false information about it, I would want the facts.

America can survive a probe into the Tillman death.

Sports Illustrated ran an article a month or so ago in which they interviewed one of the guys next to Tillman when he died.

This is the quote this soldier provided in the SI article.

This shat happen in war. Get over it.

I didn't know swearing was allowed on FreeRepublic now, but if it is, let's try to do it right. Shat is the past tense of the verb to shit. You were going for the noun, which is shit. Though Strunk & White's probably recommends a more formal variant, such as "crap" or "doodoo."

(Oh, and it's happens. This shit happens. Not happen.)

In any case, you've developed a wonderful new motto for CALL; heeding it will certainly cut down on the amount of work they do. Accepting a status quo is always so much easier than asking hard questions and demanding improvement.

In WWII, there lots of incidents of friendly fire. 200 men were killed in Normandy, including their general, when a bombing mission aimed short.

Was this the break-out at St. Lo? If so, it's remarkable that it wasn't thousands. 1,800 B-17's and 900 B-26's -- a formation 80 miles long -- bombed the German lines. They didn't fly parallel but perpendicular to the front lines. Not a "mistake" per se but because the AAF theorized it would take too long to get the bombs on target flying parallel which would give a lot of the Germans time to escape.
