Friendly fire happens. It's tragic, but there's no use obsessing over it. That's war.
In WWII, there lots of incidents of friendly fire. 200 men were killed in Normandy, including their general, when a bombing mission aimed short. If we had stopped to investigate and tried to consider every conspiracy angle, we'd have never had time to get to Berlin.
To: BurtSB
Exactly so. The AP couldn't care less about Tillman's death.
To: Mr. Brightside
"Cease fire, friendlies, I am Pat (expletive) Tillman, damn it!" he shouted, again and again. Is this a fictional novel or a news story? How could they possibly know he said this?

This was tragic and lessons can be learned from this, or any engagement. However, to over-scrutinize and criticize the members of this operation only makes people question themselves in combat. You can't have that mindset when it's on the line.

Friendly fire incidents are a fact of war. This should be investigated and, if appropriate, the people responsible should be punished. But it's not news just because the victim played for the Cardinals.

Murphy's laws of combat are always good to remember. In this case...
Friendly fire - ain't friendly
To: Mr. Brightside
These two idiots couldn't write a children's book.
_Three of the four shooters are now out of the Army, and essentially beyond the reach of military justice.
While I am not 100% sure, I am pretty sure that if they had committed a crime like murder in the military they could still be tried under the military after they were discharged.

They won't rest until they prove George Bush pulled the trigger personally.

_Tillman's platoon had nearly run out of vital supplies, according to one of the shooters. They were down to the water in their Camelbak drinking pouches, and were forced to buy a goat from a local vendor. Delayed supply flights contributed to the hunger, fatigue and possibly misjudgments by platoon members. Not for nothing - but that is SOP for SF units - even to use AKs and locally found ammo...

All four failed to identify their targets before firing, a direct violation of the fire discipline techniques drilled into every soldier.Fog of war...*it* happens! Like Nixon discovered, the deed wasn't the crime, the coverup was!

My brother was a bombardier on that mission. He said smoke was so heavy on the ground it might as well been fog. I have read that a battalion broke through and got ahead of reconnaissance...

Seriously.
Can the media FINALLY stop beating this long-dead horse?

Fog of war...*it* happens! Like Nixon discovered, the deed wasn't the crime, the coverup was! But these brave servicemen were not President of the United States.
They were brave volunteers who were defending us against people who wish to kill us all.
But what the hey, smear them for volunteering to do dangerous combat, like a typical democrat.

It's the cover up.
Tillman was famous, so they decided to cover up their mistakes. Yes, friendly fire does happen. It's probably "what" happened.
But it's still the cover up, "stupid."
To: Mr. Brightside
Way to go AP. Who cares about the family's pain? Can we get another vote out of this?
