JOHN WHITE, REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS IN THE THIRD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MARYLAND RECEIVES LATE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM GOP

Annapolis, MD, November 1, 2006 -- John White, Candidate for Congress in MD's Third Congressional District today announced his campaign has just received a significant cash infusion from the GOP. In thanking MD GOP Chairman John Kane, Governor Robert Ehrlich, and RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, Mr. White stated, "Our campaign has gained significant momentum in the last few weeks. Wal-Mart's announcement for the new $4 prescription program in MD, and the Common Causes's CNN story on special interest money in our race, have caused national attention on our campaign. We are grateful that the party has recognized our ability to win this race. This money will help pay for a final television ad campaign on both network and cable, to get our message to the voters.”

The district is 75% white, and about 2:1 registered Dem to Pubbie. But President Bush captured 48% of the vote in 2004, while Republican Gov. Ehrlich won this district in 2002 with about 55% of the vote.

White's raised almost no money at all, yet the NRCC just dumped over $100,000 into this race. If Steele and Ehrlich have decent margins tomorrow, keep an eye on this race. Residents in MD-03, this should be some extra incentive for you to volunteer your time and to vote tomorrow.

I'd say this is also a decent indicator that the GOP likes its chances to steal a Senate seat and keep the governor's mansion.

President Bush got 45%, not 48%, in the MD-03 in 2004; I'm not sure about what Ehrlich got in 2002, but I think it was probably between 51%-54%. Still, I think Ehrlich and Steele have an excellent chance of winning tomorrow, and if they do so Ehrlich will have carried the MD-03 while Steele would have come close (he's running against the district's current Congressman, so it would be very difficult for him to carry it). The RATs are running Senator Sarbanes's son, who has name ID but not much else, and I have long thought that this race should be on the radar screen (actually, the district has been on my radar screen since the Democrats approved that grotesque gerrymander in 2001 and put too many Republicans into the district). I'm glad to hear that the NRCC has not given up on it.

My source for the 48% was Kos, so I'll take your word for it. :-) And Ehrlich's winning percentage was approximate, but I do know he won it.

I've been hearing White's campaign for a while. He has great ads.

I'm so proud because my state of Maryland- with her useless politics- has the good chance to send two needed Republicans to DC this year.

Go MDGOP!

Now *that's* what I call a no-brainer. : )

I confirmed the numbers on Michael Barone's Almanac of American Politics, which CD numbers were compiled by Polidata, and President Bush indeed got 45% in the MD-03 in 2004 (he got 41% in 2000). The district is just a smidgeon more Republican than the state as a whole, and in a 2004 election in which the GOP has an excellent chance of winning the gubernatorial and Senate elections it might be enough to pull off the upset in the House race.

As you're well aware, without access to Polidata it's quite difficult to find Prez percentages by Congressional district.

Yeah, I rely on what Barone says, but Barone relies on Polidata. Another good source is Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections, but it doesn't have CD voting for every district in 2004 (2000 is pretty much complete, though).

By the way, I spent this past weekend in PA-12. There is a lot of excitement on the ground there for Irey, with very little overt enthusiasm for Murtha. And Diana has raised a TON of money via the grassroots -- with no help from the party, unfortunately.

Good for you! I noticed you weren't posting very often in October, and assumed that you were too busy with more important business. Here's hoping for the Upset of the Cycle when Diana Irey beats Jack Murtha 50%-49%.

Fellow FReepers: I do not post often, but HAD to add my comments to this thread.

I live in MD-03, and know John White very, very well. He is a self-made man: a very successful businessman, and a staunch Republican. He will be a GREAT Congressman.

Bob Erlich and Michael Steele are surging, and I am extremely confident of a Republican "sweep" her in Maryland: Gov, Senate, and House (MD-03).

My small business is hosting (providing space and phone lines) for a GOTV effort, and the response has been tremendous...we MUST get out the vote, and I believe we will put our folks over the top.

Pray for W, our troops, and all the good men and women running for office as Republicans!

I'm voting Ehrlich and Steele tomorrow for sure here in MD-8. Unfortunately, I'm positive we're stuck with VanHollen in the House. :(

"I've been hearing White's campaign for a while."

Also lots of signs posted out there for White. A very visible campaign.

Thanks for adding a voice from on the ground, as well as volunteering your time and resources to put Mr. White over the top.

I recommend you or another Maryland FReeper also post this good news on the MD state forum.

This is my district. I live in Anne Arundel County.

In my part of the district, it's all White. I haven't yet seen a single campaign sign for Junior Sarbanes.

It's my understanding that Mr. Sarbanes is very popular in the Baltimore County part of the district, but when I'm in Baltimore County, I don't see the same saturation signage that I see in my area for Mr. White.

I have my fingers crossed on this one.
