"Leahy aims at restoring habeas corpus"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A battle is shaping up between Democrats and the White House over the Military Commissions Act, signed into law last month by President George W. Bush.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is expected to take over as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and The (Calif.) Daily Journal reports that Leahy is drafting a bill to undo portions of the new law in an effort to restore habeas corpus rights for enemy combatants."

"Meet the New Judiciary Committee Chairman, Sen. Leaky Leahy"
November 09, 2006
Vox Populi, Politics
By Jim Kouri, CPP
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Former special forces officer and columnist Geoff Metcalf provided a brief overview of Senator Leaky Leahys record of divulging secrets:
* Senator Pat Leahy was annoyed with the Reagan administrations war on terrorism in the 1980s. At the time he was vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Therefore, Leaky Leahy, threatened to sabotage classified strategies he didnt like.
* Leahy inadvertently disclosed a top-secret communications intercept during a 1985 television interview. The intercept had made possible the capture of the Arab terrorists who had hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro and murdered American citizen. But Leahys leak cost the life of at least one Egyptian asset involved in the operation.
* In July 1987, it was reported that Leahy leaked secret information about a 1986 covert operation planned by the Reagan administration to topple Libyas Moammar Gaddhafi. US intelligence officials stated that Leahy sent a written threat to expose the operation directly to then-CIA Director William Casey. Weeks later, news of the secret plan turned up in the Washington Post, causing it to be aborted.
* A year later, as the Senate was preparing to hold hearings on the Iran-Contra scandal, Leahy had to resign his Intelligence Committee post after he was caught leaking secret information to a reporter. The Vermont Democrats Iran-Contra leak was considered to be one of the most serious breaches of secrecy in the committees 28-year history. After Leahys resignation, the Senate Intelligence Committee decided to restrict access to committee documents to a security-enhanced meeting room.
Metcalf is on the record saying Leahy should have been indicted, arrested and tried long ago.
So where did the big mouth go? To the Judiciary Committee where he still has access to classified information and documents. Hes known as a man whos more than willing to speakout on issues he knows absolutely nothing about. In fact, while attempting to sound as if he were a legal scholar, hes made several flubs. During a debate on the Geneva Conventions, for example, he finally admitted he wasnt familiar with the provisions he was debating."

Correction re: CIA attacks on websites
Regarding our story posted last week, we note the following:
islammemo is cited as source of the report, in turn citing unnamed Iraqi sources.
the story at islammemo has since disappeared.
no sites are actually named as 'victims' of this campaign.
the jihadis are calling for counter-strikes against 'infidel' sites, despite the fact that there are no verifiable instances of the CIA attacking any web sites.

Blood-libel bites the dust
UN: No Evidence of Uranium-Based Israeli Munitions in Lebanon:
UN experts have found no evidence to support a press report that Israel used depleted uranium (DU) munitions during the July-August conflict in Lebanon, the UN Environment Program (UNEP) says. "The samples taken by the UNEP scientists show no evidence of penetrators or metal made of DU or other radioactive material," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner. "In addition, no DU shrapnel, or other radioactive residue was found. The analysis of all smear samples taken shows no DU, nor enriched uranium nor higher than natural uranium content in the samples." The UNEP statement said inspectors looking specifically at the DU issue had visited 32 sites south and north of the Litani River.
In October, the British Independent quoted Chris Busby, the British scientific secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, as saying that craters at Khiam and At-Tiri in southern Lebanon caused by Israeli bombs showed "elevated radiation signatures."

Iran announces plans for 3,000 more centrifuges for uranium enrichment by March 2007

Nuclear power: Iran wants to always install 3.000 centrifugal machines from here March
TEHERAN - Iran wants to always install 3.000 centrifugal machines, intended to enrich uranium, by the Iranian end of the year, which finishes in March 2007, declared Sunday the spokesman of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Ali Hosseini.
"the Iranian persons in charge and experts, under the control of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), seek to achieve this goal", declared Mr. Hosseini, questioned to know if Iran always sought to install 3.000 centrifugal machines by the end of the Iranian year.
Iran installed at the end of October one second chain of 164 centrifugal machines in spite of the threats of sanctions by the Security Council of the United Nations.

'Israel Must Prepare For Full-Scale War'
By JPOST.COM STAFF
Israel has to prepare for a full-scale war, in which Syria will be an important player, an Israeli military official told the British Sunday Times. "The challenge from Iran and Syria is now top of the Israeli defense agenda, higher than the Palestinian one," another official said.
The recent war with Hizbullah and the threat that Iran could achieve nuclear weapons capability have led Israel to reexamine its defense strategies, and focus on the region's two major supporters of terrorism, IDF sources have said recently. One conclusion is that Israel has allocated too much time and energy to addressing the terror threat posed by Palestinian groups in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
According to London's International Institute for Strategic Studies, both Iran and Syria have ballistic missiles whose range extends over most of Israel, including Tel Aviv. Funds have reportedly been approved for the construction of appropriately equipped shelters.
Eyeing Syria, the IDF has formed a new infantry brigade, known as Kfir (young lion), as a countermeasure against Syria's commando forces, which are considered "better" than Hizbullah guerrillas, a military source informed the Times. The IDF is also reportedly integrating three elite brigades in preparation for them cooperating on deep cross-border operations into Syria and Iran.
Also, shortly before the Lebanon war, Maj.-Gen. Eliezer Shkedy was appointed head of the IDF's Iranian Front - and as such will command any future strikes against Syria or Iran.
Some analysts say that it would have been better for Israel to attack Syria during the recent war with Hizbullah. Syria has consistently supplied Hizbullah with weapons, and according to recent UN reports, has continued to smuggle arms to the organization despite an international embargo. "If they had acted against Syria during this last kerfuffle, the war might have ended more quickly and better," American analyst Richard Perle said.
"Syrian military installations are sitting ducks and the Syrian air force could have been destroyed on the ground in a couple of days," Perle continued.
