"ACLU Continues War on Crosses"
National Catholic Register ^ | 11/1/06 | PATRICK NOVECOSKY
Posted on 11/03/2006 4:38:46 PM PST by Tailgunner Joe
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SAN DIEGO The man behind the lengthy dispute over a 29-foot cross on city land in San Diego has died.
Philip Paulson succumbed to liver cancer Oct. 25 at the age of 59, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Paulson, a Vietnam War veteran, led a legal battle to remove the Christian cross from the Mount Soledad War Memorial, which has overlooked San Diego for half a century.
But his case is being continued by the American Civil Liberties Union, and if efforts to bring down the cross prevail, religious symbols at Arlington National Cemetery and Gettysburg will be in jeopardy.
Thats the view of attorneys defending Mount Soledad.
If the ACLU wins this one, theyre going to go after all these monuments (including Arlington and Gettysburg), said Charles LiMandri, a San Diego attorney who has led efforts to bring the memorial under federal jurisdiction. A lot of them have either religious symbols, text or some type of religious reference on them in every state in the union, and theyre all going to be at risk.
For hundreds of years, crosses have been seen as appropriate symbols of the sacrifice someone gave for their country regardless of their religious beliefs, he said."

"How Russia Arms Terror"
By Stephen Brown
FrontPageMagazine.com | November 3, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Mother Russia is also turning out to be the mother of all arms sellers.
The former Cold War superpower, where crusading journalists and anti-corruption bankers are regularly bumped off gangland style and the rule of law has become a joke, has just been designated the leading exporter of arms in 2005 to developing countries by a report issued by the Congressional Research Service, a branch of the US Congress. According to the report, China, India and Iran are Russias best customers for its booming arms industry which took in $1.6 billion more than 2004 to reach $7 billion in sales to developing nations. American arms sales occupied third spot behind second-place France.
But it is Russias supplying of weapons to rogue countries like Iran and Venezuela that is causing friction with America."

UK: Muslim 'wanted new 9/11'
On trial for inciting murder during Cartoon Rage protests. "Muslim 'wanted new 9/11,'" from The Sun:
A MUSLIM accused of inciting murder during a protest wanted a new 9/11 across Europe, a court heard yesterday.
Mizanur Rahman, 23, was also said to have called for the indiscriminate killing of American and British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He is alleged to have made the remarks as he demonstrated outside the Danish Embassy in London after cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad appeared in a Danish newspaper.
Rahman is said to have told fellow demonstrators: Oh Allah, we want to see another 9/11 in Iraq, another 9/11 in Denmark, another 9/11 in Spain, in France, all over Europe. Oh Allah, destroy all of them.
The Old Bailey was told he was filmed carrying placards with the slogans lets annihilate those who insult Islam and behead those who insult Islam.

Race for the Islamic Bomb
The move "follows the failure by the West to curb Irans controversial nuclear programme."
"Six Arab states join rush to go nuclear," by Richard Beeston for the TimesOnline, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.
The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Irans controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the worlds most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.
The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.
All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.

Yep, those are some of our nation's chemical companies. Practicing their own version of homeland security I reckon. It's too bad the reporter for that story didn't ascertain the insurance companies for those chemical companies - and report them - it appears elevated insurance costs could be the only carrot to make them follow any degree of safety and security to protect the public around them. If I were living in Connecticut (where the article was written), I'd be checking to see if any of those companies had improved their procedures. Write-ups with names might shame them into doing SOMETHING.
The visual on that (jihadi implosion).
Yep, the visual was too much for me.

Iraqi Police Detain Suspects; Coalition Forces Kill Assassination Team
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 3, 2006 Iraqi police detained eight suspected insurgents from a government building in Fallujah, Iraq, today, and coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31, military officials in Iraq reported.
Iraqi police officers detained eight Iraqi local nationals, including three of the Fallujah mayors personal security officers, for suspected insurgent activity after receiving attacks from a government building today in downtown Fallujah.
Following a rocket-propelled-grenade attack on the Joint Coordination Center in the heart of the city, Marines from Regimental Combat Team 5 were attacked with small-arms fire from a mosque. The Marines established positive identification of the target, returned fire and commenced to cordon off the area surrounding the mosque. Soon thereafter, Iraqi police officers arrived on the scene and entered the mosque.
A grenade was subsequently hurled at the Marines from a government building near the mosque, so the Iraqi police, with the Marines in support, gained entry to the structure and uncovered multiple AK-47s, ammunition and magazines.
The eight local nationals, seven of whom are employed in the government center, are not authorized by the Fallujah government to bear arms and were detained for further questioning.
In another operation, coalition forces killed an al Qaeda assassination team in Fallujah on Oct. 31. Coalition snipers heard gunshots and quickly responded to the murder of an off-duty Fallujah policeman by gunmen in civilian clothes. The Marines from 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 5, immediately engaged the armed gunmen and killed two of them. The third gunman was killed as he attempted to flee in a vehicle.
We honor the service of the Fallujah policeman, Hamed Mohammed Jassim, said coalition spokesman Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Salas. He stood against the murder and intimidation campaign of the terrorists to help bring security and prosperity to his neighbors in Fallujah. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Assault rifles and other items were recovered from the gunmen.

Eritrean Gospel Singer Helen Berhane Released From Prison
By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries
ERITREA (ANS) -- Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a Christian human rights group in the UK, says that it has learnt that Helen Berhane, the Eritrean gospel singer jailed since May 2004, has been released from prison this week.
A CSW spokesperson said that, according to reports from Release Eritrea, Ms Berhane is at home with her family in Asmara.
Dr Berhane Asmelash, Director of Release Eritrea, said in a statement that he was extremely relieved and urged the authorities to extend the same decision to the remaining prisoners of conscience.
Helen Berhane
31-year-old Helen Berhane is a member of the Rhema Pentecostal
Church. She was incarcerated soon after releasing an album of gospel music popular among young Eritrean Christians, said the CSW spokesperson. Helen is reported to have been held for extensive periods of time in shipping containers and in underground cells at the Mai-Serwa military camp. She has repeatedly refused to sign a paper recanting her faith and promising not to participate in church-related activities.
Last month, Ms Berhane was admitted to hospital, with signs of having suffered physical mistreatment.
CSW Advocacy Director, Alexa Papadouris said: We are delighted to learn of Helen Berhanes release. She has been incarcerated without charge or trial for the last two years and appears to have suffered the most appalling mistreatment simply because of her faith, despite the provisions for freedom of worship contained within the Eritrean Constitution. We call on the Eritrean Government to release all other prisoners of conscience and to refrain from further harassment of Eritrean citizens who simply wish to worship in peace according to their faith.
For more information please contact Alexa Papadouris, Advocacy Director for at Christian Solidarity Worldwide on + 44 (0) 20 8329 0035, email alexa@csw.org.uk or visit www.csw.org.uk
CSW is a human rights organization which specializes in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all.
NOTES TO EDITORS
1. On 22 May 2002, the Eritrean government ordered the closure of all churches not belonging to the Orthodox, Roman Catholic or Lutheran denominations, and an end to all other religious practices except Islam. The move came in the wake of increasing harassment of evangelical and Pentecostal denominations in particular, which the government equated with Islamists and vilified as non-indigenous, unpatriotic agents of foreign interests, who were seeking to undermine public morality and destabilize the country.
2. Some 2000 Christians are currently detained, for the most part without charge, in Eritrea. Amongst them is the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Abune Antonius, who has been illegally removed from office and placed under house arrest for objecting to government interference in church affairs.
Dan Wooding is an award winning British journalist now living in Southern California with his wife Norma. He is the founder and international director of ASSIST (Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times) and the ASSIST News Service (ANS). "Car blast near Colombia capital kills 2"
Fri Nov 3, 2:11 AM ET
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "BOGOTA, Colombia - A jeep carrying explosives blew up south of Bogota, killing two passengers and probably preempting a leftist rebel attack, police said."
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Two weeks ago, 23 people were wounded when a car bomb went off at military university in Bogota.
President Alvaro Uribe blamed the attack on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and broke off peace overtures with the leftist rebel group, Latin America's oldest and most potent insurgency.
A similar blast also blamed on the group occurred Saturday outside a military base in western Colombia, killing two people.
On Wednesday, 17 police officers and two civilians were killed during a guerrilla raid on a remote hamlet in the country's northwest."
