"China Rears Its Head"
Charles R. Smith
Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "China demonstrated its irresponsible and dangerous behavior over the last month.
The first example was a dangerous move by the Chinese navy, placing one of its Song class submarines directly behind the U.S. aircraft carrier Kittyhawk.
According to Admiral Fallon, the submarine incident could have led to shooting. However, China has done this kind of thing before. A People's Liberation Army (PLA) report from the Office of the Central Military Commission noted that China moved its submarines into a first strike mode in March 1996."

Fake relics sold on eBay 'funding terrorism'
Hmph. I suspected that this authentic Hagia Sophia paperweight that I scored on eBay last week didn't really date from the fourteenth century. From the Daily Mail, with thanks to PRCS:
Forged archaeological artefacts traded on internet auction sites such as eBay are helping to fund international terrorism, it was disclosed today.
The faked historical relics, purporting to be genuine, Middle Eastern artefacts dating from as far back as 2000 BC, are being sold to innocent collectors and tourists for up to £2,000 each.
Police believe the profits are flowing back into criminal networks in the Middle East and that some is helping to fund insurgency in places like Iraq.
Some of the seized artefacts were on display at an exhibition of fake and forged works of art at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London today.
The exhibition is being held by the Metropolitan Police's specialist Arts and Antiques unit to raise awareness of the increasingly sophisticated fraud, estimated to worth up to £200 million a year in Britain alone.
Detective Constable Ian Lawson said of the artefacts: "We know for a fact that there is a terrorism link. Archaeological stuff is being exported by the tonne load from Middle Eastern countries. If the money goes back into criminality, some will inevitably end up in the hands of terrorists."

Pastors son stabbed to death in London
His mother says, Please find gang who knifed my son to death

Eugene Attram in soccer kit
LONDON, ENGLAND (ANS) -- A pastors son, Eugene Attram, was stabbed to death by a gang of 30 youths in Mitcham, South London, on Saturday, November 4.
Now, his mother, Maureen, has made a tearful public appeal to help find her 16-year-old son's killers, according to a story on www.thisislondon.co.uk website.
Pastor's son Eugene Attram, 16, was on his way to a fireworks display with friends in Mitcham when he was murdered in a ferocious and random assault, said the story.
Maureen Attram makes a tear plea to find the killers of her son
His grieving family made a tearful public appeal for help to find his killers. Eugene's mother Maureen, 42, a finance officer at London Metropolitan University, broke down as she told how his life had been cut short.
She said: Nothing was too much for Eugene. He was a warm, warm person always full of jokes.
I feel totally lost. I don't know what to think or do. It hurts so much. His sister Amanda, 21, said he was courageous and very determined and a fit, talented and intelligent young man.
He was studying AS levels in art, English, sports science and business at Ernest Bevin College in Tooting. He played for the Wandle Wanderers football [soccer] team and was learning how to teach other children to play table tennis.
His father Isaac, a pastor of a church in Woolwich who works for Greenwich Council, said: As a family we have been very, very hurt. I want the boys who murdered my son to look at themselves.
We're not looking for revenge; we are looking for justice to be done because we want stabbings to be stopped on the streets of London.
Mr. Attram, 45, added: The loss of any life is painful, but the loss of a 16-year-old boy is extremely painful. This has been very difficult for us as a family.
We appeal to anybody who has heard anything, however insignificant, to contact the police because that information could be very important to solving Eugene's murder.
The attack happened in the early evening on Saturday 4 November in Lavender Avenue, Mitcham. Two of the victim's friends were also stabbed but survived.
Police say there is nothing to suggest Eugene was part of a gang and there is no known motive for the attack.
Detective Inspector Nick Mervin said up to 30 youths may have been involved.
We believe there are a significant number of people that were present on the night who have still not come forward, either through fear of what they have seen or fear of other people, he said.
Police said six young men were arrested on the Saturday of the incident, aged between 15 and 24. All were later bailed to return pending further enquiries.
The following evening another three males were arrested. A 22-year-old was bailed to return pending further enquiries. A 19-year-old and 17-year-old remain in custody at separate south London police stations.
On the Monday evening, a further two males, aged 18 and 17, were arrested and are in custody.
A website for tributes to the young man has been set up at: http://eugene-attram.gonetoosoon.co.uk/my_index.php.

Brother Of Univ. Of Oklahoma Bomber Held

"Hinrichs' Brother Made Alleged Threat"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(AP) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A man whose brother blew himself up outside the University of Oklahoma's packed football stadium last year has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to assault an FBI agent in Colorado.
The FBI said Thomas Carlisle Hinrichs, 25, of Colorado Springs made the threat last week after he was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting his father. The FBI also said the younger Hinrichs had been under investigation for allegedly threatening the government.
Hinrichs was being held Wednesday in the El Paso County jail.
His brother, Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, died Oct. 1, 2005, when a bomb he was carrying went off outside the University of Oklahoma football stadium in Norman, Okla., during a game FBI investigators concluded he was not a terrorists but did not speculate on whether he triggered the explosion intentionally. His father has said Joel Hinrichs was severely depressed.
Thomas Hinrichs was arrested Nov. 15 in Colorado Springs after his father, Thomas Hinrichs Sr., told police the younger man had assaulted him. Thomas Hinrichs Sr. had no listed phone number and could not be reached Wednesday.
Police who arrested the younger Hinrichs said he had a Romanian-made assault rifle, ammunition, a military helmet, a ballistic vest, a knife, knee pads, a flashlight and other gear in his car and was carrying another knife.
The younger Hinrichs told a Colorado Springs officer he had the rifle because of an FBI agent named Todd, the FBI said in an affidavit filed Tuesday in Denver federal court. The agent's last name was not listed.
Hinrichs also told the officer the FBI had harassed him and then became agitated and screamed "I will settle it," the FBI document said.
He later told FBI investigators he had abandoned the idea of killing the agent, the document said."

A Profiling In Courage (Removing the six Mullahs from US flight)
Investor's Business Daily ^ | Nov. 22, 2006 | IBD

Kudos to US Airways. Risking fines and a boycott, it did the right thing this week by removing a group of Muslim men from a flight to protect its crew and passengers.
By most accounts, the six bearded men were behaving suspiciously at a time when airports were on high alert for sky terror during the holidays. "There were a number of things that gave the flight crew pause," an airline spokesman said. According to witnesses and police reports, the men:
Made anti-American statements.
Made a scene of praying and chanting "Allah."
Asked for seat-belt extensions even though a flight attendant thought they didn't need them.
Refused requests by the pilot to disembark for more screening.
Also, three of the men had only one-way tickets and no checked baggage.
Police had to forcibly remove the men from the flight, whereupon they were taken into custody. A search found no weapons or explosives, and they were released to continue on their journey.

Missing keys, holes in fence and a single padlock: welcome to Congo's nuclear plant

The IAEA is worried that lax security could lead to enriched uranium falling into the wrong hands
--
Congos atomic energy commission has missed every target on security and safety, but funding is coming in and its officials believe that a bright future lies ahead for the nuclear facility.
--
Amid the market stalls, hawkers and gridlocked cars on the road out of Congo's capital and into the Kinshasa hills there is nothing to mark the way to a nondescript clutch of buildings a few hundred yards down a side street.
The dilapidated concrete compound is protected by little more than a low-slung rusted barbed-wire fence and a rickety gate sealed by a single padlock. It would be easy enough to slip through a hole in the fence but there is no need, as the main entrance to what is supposed to be one of the best guarded sites in Congo is often unmanned.

"Grandmother in first Hamas suicide attack in two years"
breitbart.com ^ | 11-23-2006 | staff

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Palestinian grandmother blew herself up in the Gaza Strip, lightly wounding three Israeli soldiers, in the first suicide attack claimed by Hamas in almost two years.
The mother of nine and grandmother of 41 became the oldest Palestinian suicide bomber at the age of 57, approaching troops operating to curb daily rocket attacks, the army said.
"Troops saw a woman approaching them in a suspicious manner and identified her carrying an explosive device," a spokeswoman said of the incident in the northern town of Jabaliya.
"They then threw a stun grenade in her direction but she managed to blow herself up," the spokeswoman said, adding that three soldiers were lightly hurt.
Within minutes the armed wing of the Hamas claimed the bombing."

Iran Is Suspended From World Soccer
AP ^ | 11/23/06
Posted on 11/23/2006 10:36:16 AM PST by Juan Medén
ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) - Iran was suspended from international soccer by FIFA on Thursday because of government interference with the country's soccer federation.
The decision was made Wednesday at an emergency council meeting of soccer's world governing body. FIFA said it had given Iran a Nov. 15 deadline to reinstate elected soccer federation president Mohammed Dadgan and comply with FIFA regulations.
"This deadline was not met," FIFA said.
FIFA said Iran was not abiding by rules regarding the "independence of the decision-making process of the football governing body in each country and the way in which changes in the leadership of associations are brought about."
Iran, which played in the 2006 World Cup and has qualified for the 2007 Asian Cup, will be reinstated only after drafting new statutes and organizing a new election under the supervision of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.
"The lifting of this suspension would depend on the above road map being accepted and fully implemented by the relevant authorities in Tehran," FIFA said.
