(CBS) Another apparent breach of classified material is under federal investigation at the nation's premier nuclear weapons laboratory: Los Alamos National Laboratory, sources tell CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.
The breach apparently was discovered when Los Alamos police recently conducted a methamphetamine raid on an area home. Inside the house, along with drug paraphernalia, police allegedly found classified materials apparently from the grounds of the Los Alamos Laboratory. How somebody involved in illegal drugs would also have access to classified materials from the nation's nuclear weapons facility is unknown but under investigation.
The home is believed to belong to a Los Alamos Laboratory contractor who does maintenance at the laboratory.
The FBI has been called in to lead the investigation into the security breach and executed a search warrant on Friday. The U.S. attorney's office in Albuquerque, N.M., is reviewing the case.
The Los Alamos Laboratory has been hit by multiple security and management scandals in recent years. Problems were so widespread that Congress forced the contract for management of the lab to go up for bid for the first time ever. However, after bidding, the contract was re-awarded to the same contractor: the University of California.
Los Alamos public affairs officials will only confirm the matter is under investigation.
MOAB or NUKE.....decisions...decisions.....
MOAB or NUKE.....decisions...decisions.....
Hopefully the feds will give us more specific info soon.
they make them up, its just a 9 digit number.
this is totally different.
And yet the same. We are getting screwed every which way.
There is security at Los Alamos? Since when?
How many months will that lawyer serve in jail for working with the terrorists?
12? 24?....When they find this person I'll guess he/she will get at least 6 months.
"the handling protocol for them can sometimes be violated in a totally innocent way."
=====
Totally innocent, my foot!
Those types of documents are not supposed to be removed from the premises and even on the premises are supposed to be kept locked in safes.
Now tell me that someone manufacturing drugs in their home just "innocently" takes home highly classified documents.
Those documents are classified precisely, because their disclosure causes grave damage to the country, by revealing information to our enemies.
Ok. I'm retiring early tonight and I'm chock full of high expectations that the nyslimes will leak the real facts by tomorrow morning when I arise. ;)
"Analysts".
It's amazing the formerly titled file clerks and secretaries that are now glorified as (Official Acronym Here) Analysts these days.....and oddly enough, a large number of them seem to be facing charges of stealing the identities of US federal employees, or "accidentally" wandering home with national security secrets and conveniently losing them....or both.
Ping.
Drug Raid Yields Los Alamos Documents
(10-24) 20:12 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --
A drug bust at a trailer park in New Mexico turned up what appeared to be classified documents taken from the Los Alamos nuclear weapons laboratory, authorities said Tuesday.
Local police found the documents while arresting a man suspected of domestic violence and dealing methamphetamine from his mobile home, said Sgt. Chuck Ney of the Los Alamos, N.M., Municipal Police Department. The documents were discovered during a search of the man's records for evidence of his drug business, Ney said.
Police alerted the FBI to the secret documents, which agents traced back to a woman linked to the drug dealer, officials said. The woman is a contract employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory, according to an FBI official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case.
The official would not describe the documents except to say that they appeared to contain classified material and were stored on a computer file.
Feds probe LANL security breachThere has apparently been a security breach at Los Alamos labs involving classified documents, KRQE News 13 has learned, which has led the FBI to launch a major investigation.
The security breach was discovered last week after the Los Alamos police department responded to a domestic violence call a Los Alamos home.
While inside the residence, police reported discovering drug paraphernalia along with classified materials that sources said apparently been stolen from the nation's premiere nuclear weapons lab at Los Alamos.
Los Alamos police identified the owner of the residence as Justin Stone whom sources believe to be employed by a laboratory subcontractor doing maintenance at the lab.
News 13 has learned the FBI is leading the security investigation, and on Friday, FBI agents served a search warrant in Los Alamos.
It is not known what the FBI found because that warrant has been sealed.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Albuquerque is reportedly reviewing the case. An FBI spokesman declined comment on the investigation.
By late Tuesday afternoon, Los Alamos lab had not issued any statements.
"the University of California!"
Giving Los Alamos over to Berkeley types to manage is like giving Los Alamos over to Berkeley types to manage!
They might be giving our secrets directly to Kim Jong Il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and even George Soros.
mexican mafia(who deals in meth)and muslim terrorists who would pay a lot of money for classified information.
Then you have muslims passing themselves of as mexicans.
I bet somehow it's connected to mexican mafia making money off terrorists.
I don't mean in this case, I mean generally. not everyone who mistakenly puts a document into their briefcase before going home is "revealing them to the enemy", or destroying them like sandy berger.
Git a Rope,!
They are very tightly linked to Richardson who is--as far as we know--the only governor to have what amounts to his own private army (of druggie/cultists).
OK, I'm reading the story which says the place was shut down in 2004 after disks were reported missing. Is that correct, and what about the hard drives etc...?
Am I missing something? or did they leave out the whole '90's Los Alamos laptop/hard drive Clinton record?
so why hasn't this administration cancelled this contract? they've had 6 years.
