I think it might be apropos to blame North Korea's nuke test :)

I used to own property in Kona - Palisades but lived on Oahu. Glad they seem to have fared pretty well.

After this incident I thought that perhaps I was the foolish one for not taking cover!
They acted instinctively after having gone through a very strong quake. It's funny how we become conditioned through these experiences to act or react in certain ways.

That's about as close as anyone has come to It's Bush's "fault"! :^)

The power outages are a distraction so Rove can reprogram the voting machines.

We've got a nice readout from the earthquake in the Seattle area.

Oh, damn, sorry. We were having one of those disjointed conversations that go on around here sometimes where the participants know what they're talking about, but no one else does. We were comparing our experiences in the Northridge quake of '94.

But, thanks for those thoughts about the folks in Aloha-land. If the Northridge experience is any example, the full extent of the damage won't be known for a day or two. The media just gets one or two little slices and keeps repeating those over and over. I'd say they'll have a sizable property damage toll, and a few deaths from heart attacks and things like that. So, you're right, prayers up.

Good grief people, you are in Hawaii! It isn't like you need to fill up for a 500 mile road trip.

Their interstate does get crowded

Yes and a back up generator esp. if you have special medical needs and need to be self suffieciant.

We have been looking since Katrina (west coastal residents oursleves)
for a legit contractor to put in a 13 kw system that goes on auto mode in an electrical/emergency mode.
Hospitals are not an option they need to be staffed for trauma patients primarily IMO.

Hmmm, was that when they were filming a Batman sequel? I seem to remember redoing some of the dining furniture at the commissary around that time... Remember that set.... I'm probably off on the timeline... it's heck getting old! ; ~)

did you know Kerry served in Vietnam?

He did? You'd think he'd at least mention it?

The BBC reporter seems to think that Big Island is the actual name of Hawaii.

Sometimes their reporters seem very knowledgeable about the places on which they are reporting, and sometimes less so. This one falls under the latter. (They do have a tendency to stereotype regions of the United States, however).

I'm in KY and have it. Here the cost is very low, but it certainly makes me feel better having it.

Thanks! Just saw a science guy trying to explain what happened to an FNC reporter. The science guy said something about Hawaii sinking at a rate of about an inch a decade, and the earthquakes were jerks generated by the earth adjusting to the sinking motion. Not the kind of twisty quakes you get from quakes at plate boundries, IIRC.

Assuming you're not just yanking my chain, using the phrase logarithmically in this context is supposed to convey that it isn't a straight line progression over time. The further in time you go from the event the MUCH further out the odds are of something happening. In this case you have a pretty good chance of a bigger quake within a few hours, but that dwindles to almost nothing over a short period of time. A linear progression would be much more straight forward, where the likelyhood goes down, say, by half in an hour, then another half of that in another hour and so on.

Let's keep pounding this into the ground. Maybe then we'll get to the bottom of it.

Fox is carrying on like this is another Indonesian earthquake, and sounding more and more disappointed tha tthere is no tsunami to report.

Let's get on with Fox News Sunday...
