It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.
It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.
Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.
An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.
"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.
"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

Not gonna give the site the hit...wouldn't be prudent.
My daughters VIVO the soaps...I TIVO Flower and the gang, lol.
Yeah, Gnat, we took down Clinton and chased Ellen DeGeneres off the air. Why, we even know where Jimmy Hoffa is.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste - fortunately, she was busy flapping her incredibly stupid yap and never got one, so . . . . .
Gnatalie Maines is so stupid, she is giving stupid people a bad name!!
Actually that is our buddy Rove at the WH with his hurricane machine.
"Free Republic . . . The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music . . . "
Uh oh, an instant message from: http://www.he-man.org/cartoon/cmotu/index.shtml
It's from the `Big Guy'! I've been "encouraged" to key Alec Baldwin's car . . . must obey . . .
Gotta go!
The Chixie Dicks have obviouosly been contacted by the DNC and now are part of the campaign to ban all politically oriented Blogs, or tax them out of business.
This planned destruction of on line political communities is what we would have to look forward too under a Dimocrat administration and congress.
This article reminds me that the Liberal Socialists will seek to destroy Free Republic, just as they have kept trying to destroy Rush Limbaugh, Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, and President Bush.
AND WE ARE HERE TO STOP THEM IN THEIR TRACKS!!!
I always thought it was short and skinny. I never heard a woman described as "petitte" who was rotund.
Thanks Nats for the free publicity in Australia.
It will be good target practice for the viking kitty/zot crew as well.
Last I checked Natalie's mouth and her backhand to her core audience is what brought her down.
But, I'm sure JimRob and Freepers won't mind the notch added to their belt if she wants to turn credit this direction. LOL
They are adorable aren't they? The realism makes me squirm though. Poor Bubble. I miss Shakespeare too. I also got upset over the ousted daughter--can't remember her name right this second.
I remember hearing the OWNER of the Philadelphia country station, WXTU (billed as the largest country station in the Northeast), come on the air and make the announcement that the radio station would NOT be playing any material from the Ditzy Clucks in the future. Except for a few slips to play "Earl had to Die", I think they've stood by that, even when the Dumb/Clueless performed (or tried to) in Philadelphia.
"petite" - She's not fat, she's just short for her weight.
The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines apologized for disrespecting President Bush during a London concert in 2003. But now, she's taking it back.
"I don't feel that way anymore," she told Time magazine for its issue hitting newsstands Monday. "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever." (May 2006)

Maybe it has something to do with this (her interview in 2003):
MAINES: (during her interview with Diane Sawyer)
The people who are on our side think I was pressured. They would like to believe that I was made to apologize
They liked me until I apologized. (Laughs) And then the people who didn't like me thought that it was written by someone else and couldn't give me credit for my own apology, and neither of those are true
I hate to show my ignorance but I had never heard of this group until I saw them interviewed on ABC TV a few nights ago.
It is obvious that she has never read a single thread on this board. 8<)
someone should take them to crock world on a one way trip ,but they would probaly give it heart burn
..I'm just saying it's also for a shorter stature and many petite women are slightly chunky but can still be called petite, FWIW.
Most people here (FR) simply refer to natalie as 'the hydrant'...:^
Gotta love this! The Dixie Chicks are scared of us because we have the right to free speech like they do! I feel power hungry don't you? :-)
