George W Bush may be backed by Christian fundamentalists but in his home state of Texas, Islam is the latest big draw. The Bible belt is transferring its allegiance to the Qur’an because, for many erstwhile Christians, believe it or not, the church is too liberal.
Eric was a Baptist preacher before he became a Muslim 14 years ago. Now he prays five times a day – even in the middle of watching a football game. His wife, Karen, also a convert, is covered from head to toe in the traditional Muslim burka. Islam, says Eric, ‘is everything I wanted Christianity to be’. His mother has found it hard to come to terms with her son’s conversion and believes he will return to the Christian faith: ‘Then he will be a dynamic preacher.’ Eric says: ‘Maybe some day she’ll embrace Islam.’
Women are also becoming followers of Muhamed. Yasmine (previously Mindy) arranged a marriage for herself and has three children. Islam, she says is ‘the solution to a lot of the prevailing evils: drugs, adultery, fornication…’ Converts often see the religious laws more clearly than those who have been brought up as Muslims and Yasmine can spot a mistake at 20 paces. She believes that she has a unique opportunity to help people who are born into the religion get back to the fundamentals.
Catherine has been a Muslim for two weeks. She came from a privileged background – private school followed by a career in PR. Now the established Muslim women guide her through the purification rituals as she washes before prayer and removes her nail varnish.

I suspect that this article is either completely fictitious, or has stretched the facts so far that it might as well be considered such.
None of the supposed converts are identified except by first names, and their descriptions seem somewhat vague, even considering that this is a short background article.
Moreover, they are all identified by Western, Christian names. Converts to Islam take on Islamic names, even if they do not commonly use them.
I don't doubt that there are Texan converts to Islam. I do doubt whether this article is anything more than propaganda.
Hey freedom of religion is a wonderful thing until your religion kills purely for its own reward then its not religion its a cult ....

Being an Amish or Mennonite is being a Christian. One dies to one's self-righteousness and gains true righteousness in the eyes of God, imputed by means of Christ, who suffered death, separation from God as the penalty for our self-righteousness and vainly self-serving desires.
But, this man has found a religion which feeds his self-righteousness. The problem is, that is a very popular course.
Centuries ago St. John of Damascus (author of the hymn "The Day of Resurrection") said that Isalm was God's judgement upon an unfaithful Church.

Very true, about the prisons...but, some do get out...and then, if they hook up with a mosque that say has some al-queda or Hezbollah types hanging around??
I don't know about the 400,000 part...and from living in Texas, I would say the population has become decidedly hispanic lately...and I don't know how many hispanics would be drawn to Islam...(although I guess it happens).

I don't want to sound flippant about the post but these "conversions" sound more like a post-adolescent, trendy sort of attention-getting rebellion. I doubt that such really understand Christianity or Islam except in a very superficial way.
What should be of more concern is the increasing appeal of Islam to the black underclass both here (where an estimated 1.5 million blacks are Muslim)and in Britain.
Speaking of Britain, one of my favorite contemporary writers is the psychiatrist Theodore Dalrymple. In a celebrated essay that David Brooks of the N.Y. Times said was the best journal article of 2004, Dalrymple explained the appeal of Islam to Britain's black criminal class. I'll quote a piece from that essay:
He says Muslim literature in prisons is primarily directed at "...Jamaican prisoners. It answers their need for an excuse to go straight while not at the same time surrendering to the morality of a society they believe has wronged them deeply. Indeed, conversion to Islam is their REVENGE UPON THAT SOCIETY, for they sense that their newfound religion is fundamentally opposed to it. By conversion, therefore, they kill two birds with one stone"
Now that syndrome is REALLY something to be worried about.
