It Takes a Sex Scandal("If Democrats can’t win now, they’re doomed to become modern-day Whigs.")
Newsweek ^ | Oct 3, 2006 | Howard Fineman

Posted on 10/03/2006 5:04:07 PM PDT by kellynla

An Iraq war that has cost us nearly half trillion dollars—and the good will of the world—might not have done it. Runaway federal spending that allowed the national debt to reach $8.5 trillion might not have done it. George Bush’s low approval ratings, the lack of comprehensive immigration reform, the historical pattern of an anti-incumbent “six-year itch” in presidencies, the cascade of stories about administration ineptitude and dissembling and congressional financial and lobbying corruption—none of these issues seemed destined to end the Republicans’ 12 year reign in Congress.

Then came the Foley Scandal. If the Democrats can’t take the Hill now, they deserve to go the way of the Whigs.

Real Americans outside the Beltway don’t look at politics the way we do here. I call Washington the Cave of the Sightless Fish: we hear everything, see nothing.

In the real world, families don’t care about abstract “investigations” into “who knew what when.” While the Beltway is trying to figure out whether Speaker Denny Hastert can save his job (he is dangling by thread), the real world is focused on children: in this case, the 16-year-old congressional pages.

Yes, he IS a hack, but if GOPers don't stay home/vote fringe, then perhaps we can keep the damned Dems from taking the House and the Democrat Party DOES start looking like the Whigs; a party on their last legs.

Imagine you are 16 years old again, and a male. A 50 something year old man asks you for sex.

You:

A - Say, "You are an authority figure, I cannot refuse"

B - Save the messages for years to hand over to the press

C - Beat the living cr@p out of the 50 year old man.

Am I the only guy in America who believes in Answer C?

Let's get something clear - by 16, most guys are not capable of being preyed on by pedophiles. Most 16 year olds are essentially sexually adults by 16. They might not be able to handle the emotions, but at 16...they aren't 'children'.

All the 16 year olds I knew were entirely capable of telling an old man who asked for sex not just NO, but HELL NO!! - and 'I'll beat the daylights out of you if you come close to me again!'

Foley is disgusting, but so are the homosexual pages that allowed it to go on.

Who knows -- if the Dems take over someday Foley's predations might be perfectly legal!

I was under the impression that Foley's activities were legal in D.C. Isn't the age of consent for homosexual relations in Washington 16?

If its legal to actually commit sodomy with a 16 year old, why would it be illegal to make a homosexual pass at one?

Good riddance to Foley, but the Democrats have to pay a political price as well, for holding this back for a couple of years just to try and make political hay.

The country has now seen sex scandles in both parties. The Republicans can win on this if there is a big enough demonstration showing how differently each party handles them. The Rats defend the bad behavior of their offender and attack the victims (Paula Jones, Kathleen Willy, Monica Lewinski, etc.) while the Republican promptly ditch the offender.

I know that the search is on for complaints, however old, about unnamed Democrats who might have come on too strong to male or female pages.

Typical, isn't it? Republicans are predators; Democrats may have just "come on too strong." Okay, if the only problem is a Democrat "came on too strong" how strong should a Congressman come on to a sixteen year old? Disgusting....

Exactly. The WSJ op ed page had a column on this today that made that very point. You may want to hunt it down if you haven't already seen it. You are right-- had the Republicans pursued this any more than they did, I can just see the Washington Post/NYT headlines: "Sexual McCarthyism: For Gay Republicans, Suspicion and Homophobia are the Order of the Day."

If Foley had been a Democrat, the page would have been a Karl Rove operative trying to entrap the Congressman (who may have, in his drunken state, thought they were messages from an 18-year-old girl). Or else the messages were fabricated.

At any rate, worth only a tiny notice buried on p. 18.

This isn't much of a sex scandal. There's no sex.

LOL Right you are. Where is all the "touchy, feely"? Give 'em a few more days.

I read one of the posted IMs. The page said he was in a gay bar (with fake ID ) when he saw Foley. What was the page doing in a gay bar....hmmm

I should have said the page stated this in a cover email to the website that may have supplied the IMs to ABC.

I'm guessing...Mommy took him there?

This is all a bunch of stupidity. If Foley refused to resign, it would be different. If ANY democrat resigned for wrong doing, maybe it would be different.

But mainly, the "kid" is as much to blame as Foley. Of course, 'gay bar page' probably isn't the most manly of young men...

What a worthless bunch of hack pols if only scandals and not legit issues is how they might be elected. None of the Dems is really willing to deal with the major issues of war and peace realistically nor are they dealing with the huge govt. receipts due to the tax cuts, the Dow moving, the reality of the Wall, and good conserv SCOTUS and lower court jurists being approved.

I agree with RUSH, we need to take the gloves off NOW. If we take the RATS out now they will never be able to stage a comback again. This is the time to break open your penny bank and sell your house to help not keep the the two houses BUT to take even more seats away from the RATS.
