A teenager was stabbed when hundreds of people became involved in a battle on the streets of Preston. Trouble centred on the Jamea Masjid mosque in Clarendon Street, Avenham, for more than four hours last night (Sunday) and led to a massive policing operation.
Preston's police chief said the problems were triggered by local youths throwing stones at cars belonging to people attending the mosque.
This sparked a response from around 200 people inside the mosque who came out to defend those under attack.
It resulted in one 16-year-old Asian youth being stabbed in the arm, but ambulance crews were turned back as the police felt it was too dangerous for them to enter the scene.
Fighting continued into the early hours and led to police requiring back-up from officers as far away as Lancaster and Burnley.
Chief Supt Mike Barton, divisional commander for the area, said more than 100 officers were deployed and he was treating the incident as race-related.
He said: "Some people I spoke to at the mosque insisted it wasn't racial but I think some people at the mosque believe it was.
"Until we actually find the offenders and speak to them, and because some people believe it to be racial, then that's how we'll treat it."
Insp Simon Hayes, force incident manager for Lancashire Police, described the incident as "community tension" with youths on the streets in a "confrontational mood".
He said: "As a result of that, there was a high-level policing operation to reassure the public and disperse these groups.
"There was no major disorder or serious incident."
Ilyas Desail, of the Jamea mosque on Clarendon Street, said: "It is not a mosque issue, it is a community issue.
"It is the month of Ramadan and that is the only reason the mosque has been brought into this.
"We are all upset by this, everyone is upset. No one is going to be happy with the tarnishing of such great efforts we have made in Preston in the past 40 years."
A mother-of-three, 33, from Clarendon Street, said: "It's getting ridiculous and for the past two nights there's been fighting."
You did. I specifically remember it.
Regards, Ivan
Well I don't. Prove it. Pretend I'm from Missouri.

Hey, it's my taxi ride and I'll cry if I want to.
We have the exact same problem here with immigrants.
Hugo Chavez is not alone,he has millions of followers in the US.

to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlan.
We're a free country. Cry all you like. But that also means television companies can run advertisements that are weird, objectionable and downright strange too.
Ivan
I'd cry if I got a taxi from London to Heathrow. That would be from looking at the meter though, rather than out the window...
55 pounds! There are many reasons to cry on the way to Heathrow.
So, when Bill Clinton was ravaging the land, did you just say, "Golly, we got what we deserved and we're in the crapper for good?" or did you actually stand up for your country and say, "No, this is a good country, and we will carry on in spite of the idiots in office."
I AM SICK UNTO DEATH OF THE ERUOPEANS.
I'm sure the Europeans aren't fond of your spelling. But fortunately we're not Europeans. We're British. Our proximity to the scene of the crime does not establish involvement.
Instead of handwringing about the evil Muslim infestation over there, you people need to organize some backbones and some weekend target practice. Good God Almighty, you people conquered half the world, what has happened to you?
Americans used to publish posters of their allies during World War II and produce films promoting the alliance between Britain and the USA rather than look down on the British for any perceived sin against conservative values. What happened to you?
Ivan
For every idiot there is here that denigrates you and your country, there are a hundred who care and treasure you and
the mutual support our nations enjoy.
Your FRiend.

You should have taken the Heathrow Express from Paddington. That was your first mistake.
Ivan
Hmm...this is the first time you've admitted that the billboard is "weird, objectionable and downright strange too."
I didn't say I liked it. I said you're making a big deal out of something trivial.
And congratulations, you've managed to create a good old fashioned bust up out of it. I hope your sense of vengeance is assuaged.
Ivan
This whole argument is facile. I spend about 8-10 weeks a year in USA - 2-3 in Australia (a painful few elsewhere) and the majority in the UK. All three great freedom loving nations have for more in common in terms of core values when push comes to shove than differences in detail about how they go about stuff. Whenever one is abroad it is easy to note the difference and dissent. I could easily bitch about the day to day grinding down of the WOT by the Washington Post or NYT or CNN or point at GWBs 30 something approval rating (that makes 70% of the US commies right!??!?) or I could look at ACTIONS not MEDIA SPIN and spot the good guys from the bad guys and accept that there is a mix of both in all great nations, but - when the hard times come - we know who is on our side. And I hope vice versa. Get a grip!
Those billboards are no more offensive than Code Pink insulting wounded American troops in the US. We have enemies, but the UK is not one of them.
I don't understand all the Brit bashing on this board. We need all the friends we can get. Why insult them?
LOL. I'm laughing enough for the both of us! I've worked in the UK and loved it. The BBC is dreadful, I think most of your papers are absolute cr@p, but otherwise, what a great place! I never felt any overt anti-Americanism - sure there were jokes, but I wasn't offended.
and when you move into a new house, or rented accomodation, a few months later you get a letter come through the door saying something along the lines of:
"warning - we have no record of a TV license purchased for this residence. Possession of a tv without a tv license can result in a £1000 fine. You can buy a tv license at blah blah blah"
Ie they assume that everyone must have a television, so therefore the few addresses that aren't registered with a license come under hard scrutiny.
A few months after ignoring the letter you can expect tv license officials to turn up at your door. If you don't answer they will try peering through windows to see if you have a tv. If you do answer they will try and search your house (they can't legally of course without your permission - but I guess many people don't realise that)
Im not a fan of the concept of a license fee really, but if looked at in terms of a tax (and a flat one at that), it is by far my lowest priority area for a tax cut. And the BBC is quite good when compared to ITV..
I apologise, on behalf of all rational Brits, for the offence caused by the billboards on the Motorway, although I have not seen them myself, or I would have taken the trouble to do something about it, personally..
There is a liberal, multi-culti, cultural relativism, Left-leaning scum here in the UK (echoes of your own country I know, 'cause I follow FR).
They, less and less, represent the reality of the middle-aged population of this country. Those who remember the last war and the Allies who worked together to ensure victory over fascism, and worse (and I can punctuate).
Incidentally, I do not have a problem with handing on the torch (of Empire/freedom - same thing, actually) from failing hands to more vigorous ones, as long as the ideology remains effectively the same. It is the other b**gers I am worried about.
FYI, there has been no report of this disturbance on the BBC
today. Just like yourselves, our media only let us know ..what is good for us.
I only learnt of this 'indigenous vs Muslim' problem in Preston from your (US) website.
Amazing ain't it?
And, in case you have not heard, soldiers who have been wounded recently in NATO engagements in Afghanistan and are now recovering in UK hospital wards, have been threatened by Muslims coming on to the wards and abusing them. (We have no dedicated military hospitals any more. Thanks, socialist gubermint. Our badly head wounded are sent to the US hospital in Frankfurt - Thanks, you guys).
Folks, the problem becomes worse and worse over here by the minute and the resolution is not going to be pretty. If the politicos have no stomach for it then we, the silent majority, will settle it.
Just one more straw needed (for us to go out and) to break 'the camel's' back.
