GM ad's new star stirs up debate
The New York Times ^ | October 2, 2006 | Nick Bunkley

Posted on 10/02/2006 10:38:46 AM PDT by Dan Nunn

The radio talk show host Sean Hannity is the voice in a GM car giveaway, and the company is getting some grief about it.

In what it calls the "You're a Great American Car Giveaway," GM is awarding five free cars a week through Nov. 6. But it has hired as the star of the promotion someone many Americans do not consider great: Sean Hannity, the conservative Fox News radio and television host.

Hannity, known for incendiary comments like comparing a vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton to support for Hamas or Hezbollah, is announcing the winners of the contest on his radio show -- only people who are listening for their name can win.

GM officials made some attempts to distance themselves from Hannity, saying that the company did not endorse his political views and that he did not speak on behalf of GM. They said the promotion merely used Hannity's daily radio program as a platform to reach a broad range of listeners because the show is broadcast on more than 500 stations and heard by 13 million people.

Heaven help us if an automaker pairs up with someone on our side of the fence for a change. And we're supposed to keep quiet when Ford promotes their ad campaigns. I wonder if GM will back down.

I read that GM was going to give away five cars to Air America listeners too until they realized that every listener would get a car...

All five Air America listeners ride bikes. Driving a car would contribute to global warming.

Sean Hannity, the world's most shameless self-promoter, strikes again.

Sounds like maybe Sean has taken this promotion to a place GM doesn't want to go.

Once again, when the shoe is on the other foot, they don't like it.

Of course, just how many Americans are really THAT upset that the voice giving away free cars is Hannity's? We all know how they just make up things. Or mistake their own reactions as mainstream.

An endless string of Hollywood liberals promote products across the board, but that's no problem?

"Try the fish..."

Given the thread topic, didn't you mean to say, "Try the Ruth's Chris Steak..."

I hear liberal voice over's all the time. I guess the "unbiased" MSM didn't take notice until a conservative did a voice over... Yeah, they're not biased...

Well they could have had Franken to the promotion, but with only 4 total listeners... someone would have had to have won twice.

Excuse me, but didn't you get the memo about the "unbiased" MSM giving all liberals passes on everything? Voice-over's are covered under that agreement.
