Bailey (Col.) School Hostage Situation (Update: Standoff over, 1 student and perp dead)
CBS4 Denver ^ | 9/27/06 | cbs4denver

Posted on 09/27/2006 11:57:19 AM PDT by conservative in nyc

Platte Canyon High School in Bailey was evacuated early Wednesday afternoon because of a hostage situation with a gunman, Park County emergency dispatchers said.

Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.

The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.

Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.

Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.

Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

Many of their parents are probably at work in Denver, which is why they may need to move the kids since 285 is closed... Not a whole lot of roads up there...

They locked down several schools.

Part of the problem apparently is that the kids left so fast that most of the cell phones are in the kids' backpacks in the now empty school...which is leading to further parental frustrations .

The parents can not call their kids to check on their status.

In addition to kidnapping, the hostage taker here is guilty of violating the school's Gun Free Zone policy.

Harumph. Yes, well, we'll certainly have to have an investigation of that! There'll almost certainly have to be some required seminars to make sure everyone's aware of these requirements' requirements. /s

The only safe student is a home-schooled student.

It is strange.

I will try to find out more.

My wild guess is that some of the hostages are kids.

No proof.

"...strange not knowing whether the hostages were adults or students.

35 year old suspect. "

There have been no reports of injuries or casualties...

This is horrible. Prayers for a safe ending and vicious persecution of the guilty.

If you go to Google News and search on "school threat" there seems to be several publik skhool-related problems today.

My husband just got back from an errand and confirmed that a good friend of his from when we lived in Colorado has kids that attend this school in Bailey. I wasn't sure if I was remembering right or not. Please pray for everyone's safety, and for the best possible outcome. This is going to shake this community pretty badly, IMO.

It is not a tank, it is an armored personal carrier, no big gun!

Columbine High School is in Jefferson County. That's what Shep said one time when he mentioned this hostage situation in Bailey. That's one of the reasons I posted earlier that Shep kept on saying Platte Canyon High was in Jefferson when it is really in Park County.

I can understand locking down the adjacent junior high, but I wonder why they locked down an entire other high school. Probably just in case it was part of some mass terrorist plot or something.

Yes. My father taught in Jefferson County when Columbine happened. Though his high school was at the opposite end of the county, they still went on unnanounced lockdown for fear it was an organized attack.
