Meet the Next President: George Allen stays the course
The Examiner ^ | Sept 19 | Bill Sammon

HARDY, Va. - If Republicans decide to replicate the style and substance of President Bush when nominating a potential successor in 2008, they will likely choose another conservative named George.

George Allen, that is, the junior senator from Virginia, who agrees with Bush on most major issues. On their few points of disagreement, such as immigration and campaign finance, Allen sides with the more conservative Republicans who will dominate primary election voting.

“I like him very much — I consider him a friend,” Allen says of Bush in an interview with The Examiner. “And I know a lot of people like to criticize him. We even have Republicans distancing themselves from him because his approval ratings are in the 30s.”

Then why did your previous post come straight out of the Webb campaign's talking points? If you were a Republican, and if you admired President Reagan as much as your tag line indicates, you wouldn't break his 11th commandment of politics--thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican.

If you're a Republican, pick on the Rats--not a fellow Republican.

Hah! Keep that in mind the next time you hear the so-called "true Conservatives" whine about RINOs or country club Republicans.

"But Hillary Clinton cannot beat George Allen. That's why they are out in force trying to damage him this year. It is that simple."

I've been hoping for an Allen/Rice ticket because it is (or "was") unbeatable buy Hitlery.

George Allen is going to have to get some serious coaching and advice about how to handle the smear campaigns, because they will come fast and furious if he remains a runner.

Yeah, he doesn't sound Democrat enough, like those people they keep voting for in New Jersey.

Surprise, New Jersey and its people have an erroneous understanding of politics.

Do you ever post any other time than just before elections?

Sounds like your Democrat buddy is ready for a conversion if he's citing God in his speech these days.

Very rare.

"Allen/Rice in 08"

There you go. I've been saying that for a year.

2 "terms", not "years".

He's an enigma - very devout Catholic...but he hates the current Pope, supports abortion, Gay marriage, euthanasia, etc. His argument I believe would be the Gov't should stay out of those issues. Maybe he's more libertarian than liberal but then he never saw a tax increase he didn't like and cowers before global warming too.

and had the good sense to step down after 2 years as the first President

I'm hoping you meant to say 2 terms? Otherwise, American schools are in worse shape than I thought ;-)

If "macaca" is a slip can you please let the rest of us know what it means ~ BTW, the East Indian fellow with the modified Mohawk haircut who was stalking George ought to be even more suspect now ~ another East Indian fellow with a modified Mohawk haircut went berserk up in Montreal last week and opened fire on 20 people.

There's something meaningful in that haircut ~

I believe George Allen is an empty suit. Nice packaging but not presidential.

He is no Ronald Reagan. People need to stop insulting Reagan with that absurd comparison.

It's not just the Rats. The Weekly Standard doesn't seem to like him as president either. Check the story on their web site.

Hillary Clinton cannot beat George Allen. That's why they are out in force trying to damage him this year. It is that simple.

You, sir, have hit the nail on the head.

I posted the following on a different thread over a month ago, right at the start of the whole Washington Compost "macaca" political offensive. Needless to say, it has been proven out with time.

The only unfortunate thing is to see so many Freepers on this thread falling the 'Rat lies and spin and believing that Allen is actually hurt by all the mud:

_________________________

The key to a winning GOP presidential candidate in a normal year is to find a candidate that appeals to both of the major wings of the party (social & fiscal) while not being viewed as threatening to the moderate/RINO wing.

That's how Bush got the nomination, and got elected. And, in spite of several major disappointments, it is how he's governed. Tax cuts/Mexican amnesty for the fiscals, SC judges for the socials and "compassionate" big government conservatism for the mushy middle.

Now, take a look at the supposed GOP candidates for '08:

Rudy & McCrazy - non-starters for the socials, for obvious reasons.

Romney - Representing the bluest state in the union, coupled with a Morman background, likely will be too much to overcome.

Newt - Interesting because, when it comes to ideas, he is easily the best of the bunch. However, his stint as Speaker showed having ideas and governing them are two different things. Newt was a poor leader once in power (see Breach of Trust by Tom Coburn). Plus, his personal life is about on a par with Rudy's.

With one exception, the rest of the bunch have virtually zero name recognition and even less money, making them non-starters as well.

That one exception is U.S. Senator (and former governor) George Allen of Virginia. He meets all three criteria for a winning GOP candidate, which is why the 'Rats (via Webb) and the Washington Compost (via the "macaca" nonsense) are trying so hard to trip him up before he gets positioned for the '08 primaries.

For those on the thread who would scream "War on Terror!" as reason for supporting Giuliani and/or McCain, lets stipulate that no GOP candidate is going to get the nomination unless they strongly support the WOT - none. Therefore, there is no absolutely reason to accept the RINO baggage of either Rudy or McCain - all that will do is ensure one of the major wings stays home, and Hillary strolls back to 1600 Pennsylvania.

You want to keep Hillary out? Nominate a conservative who is acceptable to each wing of the GOP. Otherwise, it is a third party situation just waiting to happen, with president HRC waiting in the wings.

The best news would be for Cheney to have a change of heart and accept the nomination for '08 - I believe he would walk over Hillary, especially once they get to debate. The next best news would be for a true conservative not currently on the radar screen to come out of the blue.

Considering the unlikeliness of either option, I believe Allen will be the best choice for conservatives in '08 - unless the left can destroy him before he gets there.

It's not like "W" was a great public speaker/performer during the 2000 campaign.

Perhaps we could learn something from this.
