Woman, 84, hid Nazi camp work for six decades -- even from her husband (Husband was Jewish)

An 84-year-old San Francisco woman was deported to Germany this month after admitting she worked as a guard in a Nazi-operated concentration camp, federal officials announced Tuesday.

News about the dark chapter in Elfriede Lina Rinkel's past left her relatives in the Bay Area stunned. They said Rinkel had kept the secret for more than 60 years, from them and, apparently, from her late husband -- a German Jew who had fled the Holocaust himself.

(SNIP)

The government's charges, filed in April, say Elfriede Rinkel was born July 14, 1922, in Leipzig, Germany; served at the camp from 1944 to 1945; and applied for a U.S. immigrant visa Aug. 29, 1959, at the U.S. consulate in Frankfurt. The visa application instructed her to list all her residences from 1938 forward, but she omitted Ravensbruck.

(SNIP)

…``because all these years she was totally embarrassed.''

(SNIP)

Ravensbruck, … saw an estimated 130,000 women and children imprisoned within its walls. About 90,000…died from starvation, execution, weakness or medical experimentation.

(SNIP)

``We did help her to close up her apartment and helped her to buy her airplane ticket and go to the airport and buy her luggage -- but never a word about why she was leaving,'' the sister-in-law said. ``We thought she was going because her situation in her apartment had deteriorated.''

…``She said she just wanted to go back to Germany, and because she told us that, we believed her.''

(SNIP)

She admitted being assigned to the camp, explaining that she had had a less desirable job as a factory worker and then volunteered to be a dog handler at the camp for better wages.

(SNIP)

She is barred from re-entering the United States. Only in death could she be returned.

IMHO, it took too bloody f'n long btwn the time they found her & the time she actually left the USA. They found her shortly after the death of the husband in Jan. '04 & didn't charged her in April '06 & she didn't leave until Sept. 1, '06. Tooooooooo long. She was here illegitimately/illegally since she LIED on her VISA application & in the cases of those documents lying by "omission" is grounds to nullify their residency status.

Even though her husband is dead & died before he found out about her Nazi Concentration Camp work I feel so deeply saddened for him that he was married to this itchba. If I were his relatives, I'd PDFQ go to the grave & have the headstone replaced so that itchba's name isn't on it any more.

I know some out there (b/c I've heard the same in re to other "elderly" Nazi cases & it is referred to by her lawyer) are thinking/saying something like "BUT she is 84 yrs old & has lead a decent life since the end of the war." Well I say SO BLOODY F'N WHAT. At least some, like Ratzinger, can TRY the excuse that their service to the Nazi's was forced but in this case this itchba VOLUNTEERED to work there. IMHO, it's even worse that she didn't do it b/c she believed in the "cause" but instead did it for $$$$$$$. Her lawyers says that "she was totally embarrassed". Well, Awww Poor Woman. /sarc/

In a different link I read that she admitted said she never applied for citizenship b/c she was afraid immigration would learn of her time at Ravensbruck. Also notice, she was STILL lying to friends, relatives & acquaintances up to & incl the day she left, as well as, accepting $ from them for her flight for Pete's sake. IMHO, all these years all she was doing was "hiding in plain sight" by marrying a Jewish man that had fled Nazi Germany. She isn't the only one to do that tactic either. Heck, I've even heard of some cases of where Nazi's & their wartime minions (those that worked for the Nazi party w/o actually joining--no diff btwn the 2 types as far as I'm concerned -- both types = evil) created new (false) Jewish identities...they'd changed their name & went to Temple & so on in order to escape justice.

Also, If it were up to me she WOULDN'T even be allowed to re-enter the USA EVEN IN DEATH. May she rot.

I know three people who were Nazis. They don't hide it. At the time they felt it right and now they're willing to live up to their deeds.

She was 84 and I think the statute of limitations should have run out on her crime about 10 years ago. The authorities ought to have her to write an extremely groveling apology and then leave her alone. Revenge may be sweet, but sometimes it's stupid.

Did you read the part that when people showed up at certain job applications if they didn't take the job - they became part of the camp?

I understand there are lifelong consequences for thing and typically advocate being responsible for ones own behavior - but I think God has to judge this woman.

How did this evil doer get deported without Buchanan rushing to her defense.

Former nazi guards are the only people Buchanan doesn't want deported from America.

Why can we deport a woman who has been in the United State--legally--for 60 years for being a Nazi--rightfully, but we can't deport a single illegal alien?

Why don't you send her a donation so she can have a better life in her old age.

You've only been here a few weeks and you have a real obsession with posting nothing but immigration threads.

That and your name makes one wonder if you've been here before.

Because there is a specific law covering these people and a special office (OSI) whose job it is to do this.

I just wonder what kind of relationship she had with her husband. I know it's tragic but I'm thinking she made faces at him behind his back, or maybe not. Maybe he went to his grave with a secret as a nazi hunter. Sort of a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"-type marriage.

HER husband was Jewish! She obviously wasn't much of a Nazi then, or anti-semitic if she married someone who was Jewish!

The whole culture at the time was brainwashed.

Now that is a great question.

Well, as I live and breathe. You mean there IS actually something a person can do that makes them ineligible to be in the United States? Well, that means we only have to wait until all the 'cell' Muslim terrorists are finally in their 80's and we can order them out. Frickin unbelievable that we can let hundreds of thousands of Muslim thugs stay and one old lady has to go - and I say good riddance to her!
