[Michigan Gov. Candidate] DeVos says he wants intelligent design taught in science classes
Michigan Live ^ | 20 September 2006 | Kathy Barks Hoffman

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos says Michigan's science curriculum should include a discussion about intelligent design.

He says including intelligent design along with evolution would help students discern the facts among different theories.

"I would like to see the ideas of intelligent design — that many scientists are now suggesting is a very viable alternative theory — that that theory and others that would be considered credible would expose our students to more ideas, not less," DeVos told The Associated Press this week during an interview on education.

Intelligent design's proponents hold that living organisms are so complex they must have been created by a higher force rather than evolving from more primitive forms. Some want science teachers to teach that Darwin's theory of evolution is not a fact and has gaps.

However, a federal judge in December barred the school system in Dover, Pa., from teaching intelligent design alongside evolution in high school biology classes. The judge said that intelligent design is religion masquerading as science, and that teaching it alongside evolution violates the separation of church and state. [Kitzmiller et al. v Dover Area School District et al.]

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm has said that Michigan schools need to teach the established theory of evolution in science classes and not include intelligent design, but can explore intelligent design in a current events or a comparative religions class.

The State Board of Education last week postponed adopting new science curriculum guidelines until state lawmakers get more time to weigh in on what the state's public schools science curriculum should be and how it should approach the teaching of evolution.

'Why do you believe the the correctness of a science is up for democratic vote? '

No , i dont think that.

But discussing alternative theories and not considering it as science should not be such a big deal if approched with a open mind.

Do you dislike Amway

I dislike Amway, because its marketing strategy is a glorified pyramid scheme and its products are mediocre and overpriced (per Consumer Reports tests)

or there is anyother companies you dislike as well

Oh, there most certainly is.

in a free market economy.

Non sequitur. Liking or disliking the practices or products of a particular company doesn't mean one doesn't believe in a free market economy, any more than believing in free speech means you have to agree with everything anybody says.

What direct quotes did you post?

A direct quote from DeVos?

Let the consumers decide that? After all Consumers are the best judge in a free market economy and if a company is selling overpriced inferior products at the market place it would not last long.

'Liking or disliking the practices or products of a particular company doesn't mean one doesn't believe in a free market economy'

Ok, but just blatant attacks on Companies(like Walmart) without any rational thought does not help the argument.

Don't assume Christian majorities.

The state is, but the local school districts in the cities I referred to are Moslem.

Do you think that possible could be the reason for all their present problems and violence i their country???
______

Oh jeez, I hope that was tongue in cheek. The reason for the violence in Israel is due to the intractability of her neighbors, who wish to see Israel go down in flames. It has nothing to do with their views on the science/mythology debate.

Having lived next door to an Amway dealer and across the street from a Scientologist

YIKES! On the positive side that probably scared all the Jehova's Witnesses right out of the neighborhood.

LOL, that's a classice of the "is the cure worse than the disease" genre!

... I simply stated that evolution had not been proven and was therefore based on "faith" ...

Huh? It's based on evidence.

If you come home, find your window jimmied and the cameo brooch with your mother's picture missing, and the cops find your nighbor's fingerprints in your bedroom and the brooch in his house, it's not proof that he stole it, it's evidence. His lawyer will try to find innocent reasons for these facts, and may succeed. But if he can't, your neighbor's guilty. No faith involved, just evidence.

The situation in science is similar. The evidence points to evolution. If competing evidence were produced, scientists might change their minds, depending on which evidence was more convincing. Alas for creationism and ID, there's a complete lack of evidence for their positions.

Yes, religeous control freaks.

[Darwin's alleged "recantation]

This was a yarn spread by a preacherwoman, "Lady Hope". By getting people to believe this lie, she became a minor miracle worker in their eyes, and (just coincidentally) it encouraged them to give her more money. Ego and money.

In the end Darwin himself recanted his own so-called theory of nonsense and thought and turned to God.

If it had happened, his wife would have reported it, since his agnosticism was a sore point for their entire marriage.

What I have trouble understanding is the disdain religious people seem to have for simple personal honesty. How can someone like you repeat the same lies over and over, and think you are doing good?

Y'know, I had that thought, but took it a step further. Start with what you said above, and then add "This class deals with, and I will teach, the best current scientific knowledge available, not religion or philosophy. I have no control over what you believe, but you will need to know and understand the science to pass this class. Now open your books ..."

That sounds good. Added to my statement, that should add up to 3 minutes or so :)

My point is that you can't prove that a supreme creator exists using the scientific method. It just won't work no matter how hard you try. That doesn't mean that I don't belive in God or that I'm not religious. Instead I take the advice of Jesus and believe through faith rather than having to see physical proof like the apostle Thomas needed. Furthermore, why waste time trying to prove something that can't be proven and distorting the minds of children in that regard?

"Why, then, is evolution such a lightning rod?

There must be something that the evolution deniers fear. I do not understand what they are afraid of."

I think the crux of the issue is the "special" nature of human beings. For those who take the Genesis creation account literally, even if you remove the time-scale issue, literalists feel they must believe that humans are a "special creation," or they can't reconcile Genesis with evolution.

Many Christians have no problem with this issue, since they take the Genesis account as allegorical. That's why so many mainline Christians have no problem with evolutionary theory.

Yep, complete with the Amway bashing.

Excuse me, but Amway has perverted the Word of God and has destroyed thousands of families. Please see www.merchantsofdeception.com.
