TOP Democrats have accused US President George W. Bush of exploiting the September 11 anniversary to boost his faltering Iraq war policy and asked TV networks to give them balancing coverage in future.
"Until now, there has been a complete absence of balance in the news coverage of national security issues," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi wrote in a letter to the main networks as both parties jockeyed for position in the November 7 congressional elections.
"We ask that you commit your network to providing fair and equitable coverage to the viewpoints of both Republicans and Democrats," the two Democratic leaders wrote.
Democrats said Mr Bush should have tried to recapture a spirit of national unity in his televised Oval Office on Monday, but instead sought to score political points and boost his party's sagging approval ratings.
Senator Reid said Democrats had been so confident the Republican Bush would be non-partisan that they had not sought equal time on television to offer their party's response.
"Sadly, it was a missed opportunity for President Bush, who apparently was more consumed by staying the course in Iraq and playing election year politics," Senator Reid said, accusing Mr Bush of once again trying to "conflate and blur the war in Iraq with the response to 9/11".
Representative Pelosi said: "The American people deserved an opportunity to grieve and come together as a nation last night. Instead President Bush gave them partisan and inaccurate rhetoric."

To tell the truth, I'm so tired of the Dems, I don't care what they have to say.
It's all so easy when you write your taking points ahead of time. That way, you don't even have to listen to the speech.
There is no way the speech could have been less political. It's not the President who is partisan, but the Democrats.
The only thing they would have held back from, would have been if the President admitted defeat, called for the pullout of all troops, resigned his entire staff and just gave the reins back to Bubba.
Uhhh, Harry, that's because you guys won't come up with an alternative. Nothing but "Bush is bad, Bush is bad".
Seriously, W could have said, "there will be no jello pudding pops in tonight's address" and Harry Reid would have screamed to high heaven that Bill Cosby himself gave the address.
Fact is, President Bush could have used his address last night to read off the titles of the songs on his iPod, and the Dims and the media would have hysterically accused him of "playing politics" anyway. As they used to say, you may as well be hanged for a sheep than for a lamb.
yeah.. earth to Dems.. he is thhe President of the United States of America! it's his job to come to the people and address them as such. he works for us!
Harry actually ought to be grateful that the media is doing all it can to bury what the Dims have to say on national security, when they're saying such things as the world would be better off if Saddam was still in power, like Jay Rockefeller just did.
The Dems want air time but they can't win an election? Is this another form of affirmative action? Kinda' like what Horowitz is doing on college campii in reverse?
I think most of America doesnt care what they have to say. What comes out of a democratic politicians mouth is always negative and often makes no sense. There is absolutely no reason to vote for them anymore. Unless you like treason and socialism?
And "Hate Bush" is more important than anything else in life.
President Bush gave a excellent speech last night, in fact, in my opinion, probably one of his best. The democrats are just crybabies.
As referred in a previous thread today, the Democrats probably criticized President Lincoln in the same way, after the Gettysburg Address.
Hey SENATOR REID, it's PRESIDENT BUSH, not "Mr. Bush". I know HE'S earned that title You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. |
House Democratic Minority Leader Pelosi and Senate Democratic Minority Leader Reid need to go stuff it.
Don't you just love their new self-appointed titles?
I was surprised last night to hear George Stephanopolous tell Charlie Gibson that the President's speech had not been political. This morning, he'd gotten the memo, and the talking points, and did a 180. I expect a dhimwit like Harry Reid to pick up the microphone and utter some mindless chant. It's much more disturbing to me that every media outlet looked at the true news of the day and ignored it in favor of playing along with Harry's lie.
Imagine if the press wasn't as Corrupt as their Party! The Rats would be lucky to get 20%.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
Didn't know the truth depended on "viewpoint".
Yes deluded Dems, President Bush is *your* president. You don't have any other. And the war is *national* policy. And being against it isn't partisanship, it's treason. Being in favor of it isn't a crime, it's a duty.
Hey Harry and Nancy, you need to put some ice on that..
