Dogpile V. Google (9-11 remembrance)
NRO ^ | 9/11/06 | Jonah Goldberg

At Google nada about 9/11. At Dogpile, this.

Dogpile V. Google Cont'd [Jonah Goldberg]

Golly judging from a lot of email, I may have started something. For example:

It took me two minutes to switch from Google toolbar to Dogpile toolbar. The best part was that the Google uninstall page had a comments box asking why I was getting rid of their service. I let them know. Believe me, I let them know.

Ah, I understand now.

I hate every and all 'helpful toolbar,' so I don't use any of them. The quicksearch thing in Firefox is enough for me.

Hey, at least they have never missed commemorating the all important Earth Day. /sarcasm

Check out their other tributes to things more worthwhile than 9-11 here: http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html

You can actually install dogpile into the Firefox quicksearch here dogpile plug-in.

While you're at it, you can also install Clusty and alltheweb.

And to top it off, Firefox allows you to remove Google from the quicksearch - Opera won't :^(

While I appreciate their nice 9/11 tribute, Dogpile is hardly a substitute for Google. Searching for the exact phrase, "George Bush," Dogpile gave me 84 results. Google yielded 26 million. What did I do wrong?"

Funny....I was shopping for a chain saw the other night...trying to find which distributors (locally) had certain models in stock....I googled my state and chainsaw...I got a bazillion "hits"...most of them led to amazon.com
Google sucks.

Apparently, Google has never celebrated Christmas since their inception back in 1999.
Interesting.

I personally like the fact that Google included Norooz (Persian New Year), BUT... I will note from observation that the "Haft Seen" (هفت سین) place-setting does not include what I have always observed, though I've just learned it is optional: the family's holy book, whether Torah, Bible or Koran.

A book of poetry is also acceptable, and somehow that alternative just seems so... Persian.

I remember FReeper Metalbird1 pointing us to Dogpile years ago.

I suspect the answer lies in 'total results' vs. 'usable results.'

Different search engines are good at different things. I use Dogpile probably 80% of the time. Google is good if I really want to dig. I utterly despise Yahoo.
