Ky. Plane Crash Survivor Asks 'Why?'

By JEFFREY McMURRAY The Associated Press Wednesday, September 6, 2006; 10:47 PM

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The sole survivor of a plane crash that killed 49 people near the Lexington airport last week told family members from his hospital bed, "Why did God do this to me?" but he hasn't mentioned the crash, a close family friend said Wednesday.

James Polehinke, who was the flight's co-pilot, can move only his head, and tears often well up in his eyes, said Antonio Cruz, Polehinke's mother's boyfriend. He said the 44-year-old has been in and out of consciousness.

Hi, just a friendly suggestion, but perhaps you and some of your "friends" could use your obviously vast scientific knowledge to inform and educate as opposed to bashing and hijacking a request for prayers. If your motives re science are pure, and you are secure in your knowledge, you must have enough insight to realize that your present tactics don't work. Scientists have the reputation, historically, of not having the best (understatement) people skills. Maybe it's time to work on that stereotype, lol.

Start your own science thread and debate among yourselves, you may attract curious FReepers who just may learn something. Show everyone your area of expertise and why your parents paid all that money for your education, lol.

Have a good week-end.

Prayers are offered for Mr. Polehinke, that he will fully recover from his injuries, and that the Lord will reveal his will in this situation. Prayers are offered also for all those who lost loved ones in this terrible accident.

He said the 44-year-old has been in and out of consciousness.

If he was badly burned unconsciousness is a blessing.

My son flies right seat on the Airbus A-320 and A-319 for a major airline, and I am more afraid of him being badly burned in any possible accident than I am of him being killed. I can certainly sympathize with this pilot's family if he has one, and my prayers are for both him and his family.

I haven't heard yet how that plane got on the wrong runway for it's takeoff run. My son flew into and out of that field at night on several occasions when he was flying commuter planes in the early '90s, and he says as best he remembers the runway markers and signs were well lighted and easy to follow back at that time. Unless the injured pilot can shed some light on this if and when he recovers sufficiently to remember what was happening prior to and on that takeoff run, we may never know exactly what caused the crash.

We do.

PatrickHenry is well known for posting hard science threads. The vast majority of them get hijacked by the fundamentalist crowd. It is getting to the point where a lot of the scientists who used to join those threads have left FR in disgust, or been banned for responding to the Luddites.

FYI, Seamoth requested #88 and #89 to be pulled as #87 is now back up. Now deleting my account for real.

I'm sorry the thread got hijacked, but we noticed that orinblamblam had gotten warned & then banned at the same time. "BANG!, stop or I'll shoot!" This has happened before, and seems to be part of a pattern of intimidation by one or two mods, and it was inevitable that the issue would blow up in public sooner or later.

Now JimRob says it was all a mistake. Fine.

(And yet, orionblamblam is STILL "banned or suspended". (throwing up hands))

A trite phrase obviously not to be taken literally here.

... but perhaps you and some of your "friends" could use your obviously vast scientific knowledge to inform and educate as opposed to bashing and hijacking a request for prayers.

Your thread had the bad luck to be the site of what's becoming a regular event, the Weekend Evo Ban-boree. That was some moderator's choice, not mine. We late arrivals came to observe the scene of the crime. That does tend to divert the discussion, but you'd have to talk to someone else about that.

Most disasters like this one turn out to be caused by multiple factors - more than one thing not working perfectly. Chances are Mr. Polehinke probably didn't make any single major bad decision.

I hope he will be able to forgive himself for all the little things he did or decisions he made that weren't absolutely perfect. It's a sad fact that we're only human.

I'll bet his overall safety record throughout his career had been just fine, too. Again - only human.

Thanks for the explanations, I understand now that it was/is a little complicated.

As far as Mr. Polehinke, you're correct, it was multiple factors. It was dark, the airport had just done "renovations" on the runway which changed them somehow, it is one of only a handful of airports with intersecting runways, and finally, there was only one air traffic controller on duty, which I believe, is against the law. The controller wasn't watching either. You're also right that we are only human and not perfect. God bless them all.

Actually I still like to pretend it's like the old days.

Ya know, 2001-2005. Good times, yeah? (/reminiscin')

Imagine how darkened and meaningless life would be if you were an atheist like orionblam

His life is even more meaningless now that he's been banned from FR.

For what it is worth, perhaps you and your friends should do a little introspection, instead of pointing the finger of blame at some imagined 'purge'.
Looking at this thread, it is fairly obvious from where the offending behavior came from. The comments made by one person in particular were out of line (more like over the top) for the topic of the thread. Instead of asking the fellow to back off, there was a defense of the behavior.
Let me ask you: Do you honestly think there is nothing wrong with obb's conduct?

This only the beginning for Mr. Polehinke. He is going to relive this over and over as investigation is going on, not to mention wrestling with guilt (real or not) for this tragedy.
Unfortunate.

By my count there are very few "biblical literalists" posting at FR.
= = = =

Actually, there are a lot of us. But most don't post often or go for long periods without posting because of the very fierce, insultive, assaultive, viscious, hostile etc. attitudes of so many naysaying atheists and others who disagree with our perspective.

My ping list for a subset of the literalists is quite long.

At least one comment looks over the top, but it is a rising to the bait of another poster who threw the first ad hominem. I don't see anything suspendable, much less bannable, compared to what I've seen on many another thread where things got really heated with nothing happening.

And you simply ignore the context presented in detail in the preceding pages on this thread. "Imagined" purge? Did HayekRocks imagine it? Did OBB imagine it? Did Tortoise imagine it? Did Carolina Guitarman imagine it? I could go on, but I don't want to go back more than a couple of weeks.
