Army deserter wants to return to U.S., mother says
Lexington Herald-Leader ^ | 7 Sep 06 | Jim Warren

Darrell Anderson, the young Lexington soldier who deserted to Canada last year after being wounded in Iraq, wants to come home.

Anderson, now 24, has been an outspoken critic of U.S. policy in Iraq while living in Canada, appearing at peace rallies and attacking the Bush administration in interviews with international publications. Earlier this year, he married a Canadian woman, which his mother said should guarantee him permanent residency in Canada.

But Lexington's Anita Anderson confirmed that her son now wants to return to the United States sometime within the next few weeks. He could be arrested as soon as he crosses the border, she said. If not, he plans to travel to Kentucky, turn himself in at Fort Knox, and face whatever punishment the Army imposes, she said.

A number of peace groups and activists -- possibly including Cindy Sheehan -- will meet him when he crosses the U.S. border, she said. She said she expects considerable press coverage.

Darrell Anderson was on a trip to northern Canada yesterday and unavailable for comment.

But Anita Anderson said she has urged him to stay in Canada.

"I've tried to talk him out of coming back, because he's probably going to get sponsorship in Canada now that he is married to a Canadian girl," she said. "But he's constantly stressed out and worried, and he feels like he can't live out the rest of his life this way."

I don't believe anyone has been executed for desertion since WWII.

Congress hasn't had the balls to declare war since WWII.

No Disrespect to you and others that served. If the politicians had left the job of breaking things and killing bad guys to the people who knew how to do it we would be telling a different story now wouldn't we. That goes for Korea too. Thank you for your service.... That is not said nearly enough by me and all the other Americans.

How long was he in the Army before deserting? What did he do to get busted down to Pvt (E-1)? Might there be another reason he deserted?

For me it's boiled down to a pretty simple truth over the years - - It was LBJ's war. He and McNamara broke it and it took Dick Nixon to get us out. Thanks for you comments, though.

I agree with part of your thoughts. Dick Nixon was saddled with a no win situation what he did created the killing fields and disrespected all soldiers who fought and sacrificed. The American public and congress made his only path out bad. People like JKF'inK and his buddies will never admit to.

Ideally he'll spend years in Leavenworth making little rocks out of big ones. In fact, he'll probably get a dishonorable discharge and little or no prison time

Don't you think he would very welcomed by J.Skerry and jack murtha instead???

BS. Yeah, some deserted, but you're probably thinking of the cowardly draft dodgers who ran to Canada.

I think that we HAD a draft dodger in the White House for eight (8!!!) years specializing in getting blow jobs in the Oval Office!!!

It fit my definition of a war. They shot at us. We shot at them. We wore uniforms. So did some of them.

Marrying an American does not guarantee one the right to live in the US.There must be a distinction in there somewhere. Please elaborate.

Unless I'm much mistaken, there was a time when marrying a citizen of most western countries (the US included) automatically made you a citizen of that country. However, over time, these countries came to realize that "undesirables" (my word) used this law to gain access to that western country for God-knows-what purpose.

Now,in the US at least, marrying a US citizen gives you the right to petition the INS for permission to reside here. The INS then (supposedly) investigates you *and* your marriage and if you're found to be "clean" (nothing shady in your background, etc) and if your marriage is found to be "genuine" (that is,not one that was entered into simply so that you could live here) then that request will be granted.

Then you'll be on track for a Green Card and eventual citizenship.

I always believed what you have just confirmed.

In practice, if you marry a citizen, you get to live here.

That's not always true.Maybe you could re-read my post or,better still, search the INS website or do a google search on "fraudulent marriages".

Of course not, that's why I said, "In practice, if you marry a citizen, you get to live here.

Wait until next week and he'll change his mind again...or run for the Senate for Massachusetts. Waffling is a prerequisite there for congressional office, so I'm told.
