Greer slams Croc Hunter mourners as 'idiots'

STEVE Irwin had embarrassed millions of Australians, Germaine Greer said last night.

And those who had mourned him with their tributes at the Irwin family's Australia Zoo in what the British had labelled "a Princess Diana moment" were idiots, she said.

British-based Greer wrote in The Guardian newspaper after Irwin's death that the animal world had taken revenge on "self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin".

Last night, she went even further.

She told Channel 9's A Current Affair she did not understand Australians' feelings of loss for Irwin.

She said he had exploited animals by telling the world how dangerous they were and then treating them disrespectfully.

"I find the whole Steve Irwin phenomenon (embarrassing) -- and I'm not the only person who did," Greer said.

But when pushed, she was unable to name anyone who had publicly agreed with her.

She rejected claims her sentiments were "un-Australian".

"I don't care what I'm being called," Greer said.

"I just hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking."

BTW if you have read the full account you will notice that the incident occurred because Steve and the cameraman got the Ray between them and it was surmised by the crew the ray felt trapped and defended itself (fight or flight instinct in action) I wonder if all of these "thousands of divers and snorkelers" that do this "every year without incident" use the same technique that Steve and his crew did?

My dad drove stock cars. He lived, and only suffered one injury in a decade of racing. I'm sure on any given night he was racing, some old lady soemwhere slipped in her bathtub and died. Somehow I think driving a stock car is more dangerous than taking a bath.

If you climbed stairs or drove a car today, you were in more danger than a recreational diver...and a lot more danger than a snorkeler interacting with a stingray.

Yes but in day to day events one "needs" to climb stairs and drive cars to get about with day to day life.(BTW I am rarely in a car and in fact was not in one today.)

However I know that today I was in very little danger of getting killed by a croc or a ray being that I have not purposely put myself in their vicinity.

Life is full of day to day risks however thrill seekers get their thrills by risking life and limb in dangerous situations. I've never heard anyone say "Wow, that guy was smart for jumping out of that airplane." after his chute didn't open and he died.

Like I said in earlier posts if he had been a single non-parent then in a way it makes sense but he had responsibilities and pushed the edge and died. His daughter will not care about Stingray city, she just wants daddy back.

Well put. And, I suppose there's some sad truth about her early childhood and horrid fathering and I have some sympathy for such.
